Windows 10 and Microsoft Word 2000 (.doc)

I have forever been using Microsoft Word from the Microsoft Office 2000 which produces the .doc.  Now I have been forced to deal with Windows 10 which will open my .doc but it will not let me do anything with it once opened, but tell me to Activate the new 365.  I have read that Microsoft Office 2003 will work with Windows 10 but will it open and let me work with my .doc file formats?  Or is there another way around keeping my .doc files?

Thank you

Read Andre Da Costa's article at https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/a-look-at-running-older-versions-of-microsoft/6faf72ea-254a-4c8e-9982-2c36cdb1936c

I haven't personally tried running Office 2000 in Windows 10; instead, I run Windows XP in a virtual machine and run Office 2000 there. However, I have run Office 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 (all installed in the same copy of Windows 10, but with only the latest version of Outlook) without any problems.

All of these versions of Word have no trouble opening, editing, and saving documents in .doc format. There are some advantages to creating new documents in the .docx format, mostly that the file sizes are far smaller, but you can stick with .doc forever if you want to.

Have you tried using Windows 10's compatibility mode? See https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-turn-off-compatibility-mode-windows-10/a96220ee-bdf1-4680-b547-8ffb99957301.

Compatibility mode is not offered for Windows 10 in the drop down menu...only goes to Windows 8.

After reading Da Costa's post, I click on .doc to open in Word 2000....it goes there but does not open the file to read, just a blank Word screen.  If I open the .doc in the Word with Windows 10, it will open but it says I must Activate before it will work properly.  Is this possibly where the problem lies?

Thank you

Yes, if you installed Office 2000 on Windows 10 from the distribution media (rather than upgrading Windows while Office 2000 was already installed), then you'll be required to activate the Office license.

That may be a problem, as I'm not sure that Microsoft's activation servers still recognize Office 2000 licenses. Try it, though. You may get a message that you need to activate by telephone; it should give you the number to call.

In the compatibility dialog, you need to select the version of Windows that you want to simulate, probably either Windows 7 or Windows XP. Selecting Windows 10 there is equivalent to saying "don't bother with compatibility".
