Why does my excel window lag so much when moved around the screen? no other app windows have the problem

When  I have excel open, even a tiny spreadsheet, and move the window around the screen there is severe lag. The window can keep moving around the screen for a few seconds after I have stopped moving the mouse. I am running windows 10 with all updates installed and Office 365 with all updates installed.

The lag gets worse when connected to an external high res monitor.

This problem does NOT occur with any other application window which can be moved around the screen as fast as I like with no lag.

I am running Surface Pro 3, i5 8Mb Ram with all updates installed.

Hi JeremyHaywood,

It seems that the lag only happens in Excel but it does not affect any other application.

I suggest you temporary close all 3rd party applications/processes, and open Excel in safe mode to disabled add-ins on the Surface Book to ensure the issue is not caused by the compatibility problem with 3rd party apps.

Press Windows logo key + R >Type excel /safe to launch Excel Safe mode.

If the issue still exists, you can try to run Online Repair. Follow this article of Repair an Office application. Also to check if you have already installed the latest version of Office, check it in File > Accounts and share the version with us.

Regards,

Eli

Hi Eli,

I have tried the options suggested:

Closed 3rd party apps, only things running are defender and one drive.

Opened excel in safe mode but exactly the same lag when moving a window around

Ran online repair (quick repair) no difference

Office version is 1805 build 9330.2087

Cheers

Jeremy

Hi JerrmyHaywood,

Maybe it has to do with the mouse and the USB polling frequency.

You can refer to this article.

Hi Eli,

Have read the article but I don't have any mouse software installed I am just using the Windows 10 drivers for my logitech M325 USB mouse and can't see any settings in control panel/mouse that allow me to change the mouse polling frequency. Can you tell me how to do that.

Thanks

Hi JeremyHaywood,

Thanks for your updated information.

According to your answer, this may have little to do with your mouse’s problem, because this problem is mainly generated by the gaming mouse. Therefore, I suggest you disable hardware graphics acceleration through the following steps. Open Excel >File tab >Options >Advanced >Display >Disable hardware graphics acceleration.

If the lag still exists, feel free to let us know.

Regards,

Eli

Hi Eli,

Tried the disable hardware acceleration option but made no difference to the window movement lag. Anything else I can try?

When I first open Excel, the window that allows you to open a blank workbook and displays recent files does not have the lag problem, I can move that window around the screen as fast as I like without any lag, as I can with all my other apps.

Having googled the problem there appear to be many people experiencing the same issue as me is it a known bug?

Cheers

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Please try to perform a clean boot on your computer to see if the issue still exists. Refer to How to perform a clean boot in Windows.

If the issue persists, could you please also provide your Windows OS version for us so that we can check whether the issue occurs on my side. Go to Settings > System > About to check the version and build.

Thanks,

Ran
