Why are files from MS Teams opening as "Read Only" when I choose to open in dektop apps?

Hi everyone,

I have been facing this issue with MS Teams for the last few weeks and it has just frustrated me to the core. This is what I've been having trouble with:

- I created files (word, excel, ppt) and shared them with my colleagues using Teams.

- They can open the files and modify them using the desktop app.

- When I choose the same option, I am told the files are "read only" and thus cannot be modified using the desktop app. I can modify within Teams and through browser.

My question is: why can everyone else modify the files I created except for me? I have checked the permissions as well, none of the files are "read only" and I have made no changes to any settings.

Everything was working perfectly fine until a couple of weeks ago and now it's just getting too much.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer

Hi Omair,

So sorry for this inconvenience caused to you.

As you mentioned the issue doesn’t happens to your colleagues, so, I think there may be something wrong with your local environment on your device. Please try the following steps:

1. Please sign out and quit all your Office apps in the first.

2. Then go to Control Panel> Click on User Accounts>Manage your credentials> Click on Windows Credentials, remove all Office 365 credentials that look like: MicrosoftOfficeXXData:XXXXXXXXX

3. Restart your computer and then open and sign in Office apps.

If the suggestion doesn’t work, we need to further narrow down whether the issue is due to your Teams app or the Office apps, it’s recommended to try to open the file using web browser. Then click “Open in desktop app” button on ribbon bar to open the file in desktop app.

If the issue persists, it means this issue is due to your Office apps. Given this situation, you may try to perform an Online Repair for Office to make sure everything get fixed. It may take more than 1 hour.

Moreover, if you need further help, welcome to contact me. And may I confirm the following information for a better understanding of your situation?

1. If the issue happens when you open the files from web browser to open them using desktop Office apps?

2. May I know if there any notification message when you open the files in desktop Office apps? If so, could you please share the notification messages?

3. The build and version information of your Office? (For example, open Word>File>Account.)

4. The version information of your Teams? (Click the profile photo>About>Version)

5. The build and version information of your Windows? (Click the Start menu > Type “winver” > and hit Enter.)

Best Regards,

May
