Attachment through Word is for Outlook email. You can access your Google email through Outlook.

Where are your documents stored? If you typically save in an online location, you may have to download documents to the local drive first. Then you can browse for the files from within Gmail.

Please understand that you are not required to use OneDrive if you prefer not to. Save your files to your local HD just as you always have done.

Using OneDrive does provide automatic saves of your work & avoids taking up space on your local device but it's an optional service.

In Gmail, compose a new email and attach the document from there.

My understanding is that unless you have set Outlook in your operating system settings as your mail client, the send as attachment function within Word will not work. I am not on a Mac so someone who is may be able to contradict my understanding.

There should be no difference in how the desktop application in Microsoft 365 and the perpetual license student edition handle this.
