When importing from Excel into a current MS Project plan, I cannot import the data. It goes to source worksheet name and then when I select it, nothing appears to map.

Existing MS Excel headers

Task Name, duration, start and end date

Existing MS Project headers

Task Name, duration, start, finish, predecessors, resource names, mileston, % complete

Steps taken to import Excel data

  1. In MS Project – File, Open, and selected Excel Workbook (*.xlsx), and clicked open

  2.  Project Import Wizard, Next, New map, merge data into active project, Tasks

  • Source worksheet name comes up as (none)

  • Other option is the name of my tab, which I select.

Nothing comes up for a field selection.  What am I doing wrong?

Melissa D_770,

Thanks for showing us the details of what you tried, that always helps us get oriented to your specific issue.

You note you are attempting a merge. Did you select a merge key?

Does your Worksheet include headers? If so, did you select that option in the import wizard (4th screen in)?

It might help if we could see a screen shot of your Excel Worksheet, and also a screen shot of the step where you select your Worksheet tab.

Melissa D_770,

I forgot to ask, which version of Project are you using? And which version of Office?

Your Excel Worksheet has column headers but yet you did not select that option in the wizard. Those headers are paramount for the import.

When you say you select your "tab" I assume you mean the Worksheet name, correct?

Dear Melissa

Could you click on File>Account and upload a full screenshot of the Account page in Project for our reference as John mentioned?

Note: Remove any private information before uploading the screenshots.

From the screenshots you provided, it seems that the Excel data isn't in the table format. Could you check it at your side and see if you see Table Design when you select the data?

Welcome to share any updates at your convenience.

Thanks for your effort and time.

Sincerely

Melissa D_770,

Being in Table Design is not the issue. Did you check the option to recognize headers in the import as I explained in my previous response?

Yes, I tried that and got the same. Nothing is showing still. Options to select worksheet are still none and the sheet I selected.

Melissa D_770,

Okay, try this.

1. In excel create a new Workbook and then on Sheet1 create a simple "plan" like this:

2. Save the new Workbook to your desktop

2. Open Project and import the saved Workbook as a new Project (no merge) as tasks and be sure to check the header option

When you select Sheet1 for mapping, what does it show? You should see this. If you do, map the two "not mapped" fields and finish the import. If you do NOT see this then something is amiss with your Office and/or Project 365 installation.

I had the same issue, worked my way down to the end of this query and was unable to import the small test file I created as per the instructions here.

I solved this issue by adjusting the column order in my .xlsx input file to match the order of the standard columns MS Project and then copy pasted the content of my Excel input file into MS Project.

I had to manually indent/outdent and I had to create a couple of extra column names in MS Project to account for additional non-standard columns in my Excel input file. Pretty happy with the result - this was good enough for me
