What is the difference between a renewal and expired certificate?

Hi,

I am gathering a list of Microsoft certificates that expire and don’t. I am a bit confused about the Microsoft certification states.

After a certification is achieved, it is in the completed/achieved state. Then, after 1 year or more, some certification become in the renewal or expired state. From my understanding, I noticed a certificate could be renewed or expired after a certain time has passed.

Some people have noted to me that renew or expired mean the same thing and that all the expired certifications should require a renewal, and the individuals should receive an email reminding them of that. So, do certificates appear as expiring when the Exam is retired and replaced by a new one? And for the exams that do not expire, would they require a renewal in future time?

I am confused if there is a difference between the two.

Could you kindly clarify?
