What do dollar signs in front of (paragraph) style names mean?

I see dollar signs in front of style names in the style list.  Do they mean that the style is not available in the template, but that there is text in the document that have those styles?

Hi Paul,

This issue seems rather strange. May we have some screenshots?

We'll be looking forward for your reply.

Regards.

It seems to be the only linked style shown in that list, but I shouldn't think that would affect the style name.

Your screen shot shows pilcrows, ¶, sometimes together with a lowercase "A," and that means a "linked" style, that is, a style which can be used as a character style.

Suzanne, Stefan,

Thanks for the info about linked styles.  It seems that the dollar signs don't ring a bell with anyone about representing anything significant?

It's not something I've ever seen. Where we often see dollar signs is in the filenames of temporary files, but I've never seen anything like that for styles. Can you check that this isn't the actual alias of a style, perhaps named that way so it will sort to the top?

Perhaps they did name it to bring it to toward the top.  There are many frequently used styles in the corporate template, however, so it is a bit puzzling that only this one style is given such special treatment.  Not sure whether it is an alias or not is relevant to the question, but is there a way to tell whether it is an alias?

To see whether the name you see is an alias, hover the mouse over the name in the Styles list and look at the tooltip. If it shows the "real" name followed by a comma and the visible name, the latter is the alias.

Also, you can click the Options link at the bottom of the Styles pane and clear the last check box to have the list show both names (but sorted by the "real" name).

If you want to change or remove the name, you can do that in the Modify Style dialog.

Thanks, Jay.  It's a real name alright.  But it's not really near the top because the list is littered with countless styles.  I only have the "Paragraph level formatting" checkbox checked, but many of the styles only have a FONT section, and their names indicate that they are intended only as font-level formatting, e.g., Char5.  Many things odd going on which seem to defy common sense.

Are you pasting content from web sites? In that case, it would be normal for character styles to be added..
