What are the keyboard shortcuts for superscripts and subscripts in excel?

I was looking up the shortcuts for superscripts and subscripts the other night and found out that control shift + will make something become a superscript, but only if you are highlighting something in a graph. I could not get the subscript key combination to work though. Is there a key combination that will make something superscripted or subscripted in all situations, such as when something is in a data box in excel?
