Unusual sign-in account activity

Getting email message supposedly from Microsoft account team but I can't see or display the email address domain. How can I determine if it truly is from Microsoft?

When I review my account sign in activity report, I don't see anything unusual sign-in. Wondering if this is a scam trying to get me to click on the "No it wasn't me" button?

The message says:

"We detected something unusual about a recent sign-in to the Microsoft account XXXX."

No it wasn't me

Good Day MollyMD,

My name is Carlo, I am also using Windows 10 pc and community member like you. Let us work together to sort this out.

-Can you please take a screenshot of the email for us to check including the email address of the sender for us to identify if its a legitimate email from Microsoft, please don't include your own email address on the screenshot for your own privacy.

-Are you using VPN connection to connect to the internet?

I'll look forward for your response so that I can provide an accurate recommendation.

Have a wonderful day ahead and stay safe.

Sincerely,
Carlo T.

This is a scam. I got the exact same message yesterday.

Hover your cursor over the available buttons and you will see the link. It does not redirect you to an Outlook/Hotmail link at all.

I received this, too. It was actually in my junk folder. I don't know if it was the same IP address, but definitely showing Nigeria and Mozzilla Fox. It didn't show up in my recent activity as I don't log into this particular e-mail address every day. What showed in recent activity was just that, the recent sign-on. That Nigeria/Microsoft e-mail arrived on Mar. 19, 2022. Today is Mar. 20, 2022. I stupidly hit "No it wasn't me", it took me to a gmail e-mail address, called ".....communications.....", wanting me to write an e-mail message, which I did not. I can't remember the whole e-mail address, but it was long. And then I realized, fudge. Got out of that gmail e-mail. Went back to the Nigeria/Microsoft e-mail and reported phishing. Once it was reported, that e-mail disappeared from the junk folder. I did have the VPN turned on, of the mobile hotpsot that I was using. I use Norton 360. Would anyone know what is the worse that may have or will happen? ie. is there a virus, malware, etc. embedded into laptop and/or my e-mail is now on their list, etc., etc., I doubt I am the only one that would have hit "No it wasn't me". Please help. Thank you.

I am also curious as to what happens as I did send it by accident. So far I just received more spam mail several minutes after telling me that I needed to update my Microsoft account that said it was from Microsoft teams but it definitely looked like spam and deleted it and then the typical you have won 5000 dollars. Right away I changed my password and made sure my two way authentication was turned on. But is that all that this does if you do actually reply to it. Also I was on the iPhone email app and the sending address still showed the no-reply@Microsoft for me until the send button accidentally got hit then is change to a gmail account.

Hi Brita1,

I ran my Norton360 Deluxe at least half a dozen times and also the Norton Power Eraser several times. It showed that I did not have anything. I had some sensitive, personal information on my laptop and my IT friend suggested to err on the side of caution and to change passwords on everything that contained sensitive information. That was a PITA, but I did it. I was so paranoid and worried that I did not use the laptop for about a month. I also asked an IT co-worker if there was something else I can run through my laptop, without paying a fee, that was more for businesses/professional, aside from the generic consumer Norton360 Deluxe that I have. He suggested a free online virus scanner (though it's more generic consumer):

I downloaded and ran that as well, as a double check. This scan also showed that I had nothing.

I've been monitoring everything as best as I can. The IT friend said I was lucky. The IT co-worker said it was a bait, to see if you would reply and from there they would try and draw information from you. Since then, I have received a couple of those on a secondary e-mail address, but I now know better!
