Unicode input in Microsoft office Windows 10

What is the correct method to input Unicode characters in Microsoft word and PowerPoint


eg. to add a ® symbol, suggested input was to type 0174 followed by Alt+X but on my laptop this input elicits the error/ failed input sounds.


is there a way to input Unicode without the numpad on a laptop without copying and pasting from the Character map app.

To insert ® without a numeric keypad, use ALT+CTRL+r or type 00AE and immediately press ALT+x

With a numeric keypad, it can be inserted by type holding down the ALT key and typing 0174 on that keypad

Any symbol can be inserted by typing its Unicode (hex) value and then ALT+x

The Unicode (hex) value for any symbol can be found by selecting the symbol in the Symbol dialog, or from a website such as
