Unable to Edit Word Documents

When I save a word document I am working on, close out of the document, then reopen it, it will not allow me to edit the file.  It is locked almost as if it has become a PDF.  Is there a setting that needs to be changed? How do I ensure documents I am saving can be modified at a later date?

Original Title: UNable to Edit Word Documents

On the top bar of Microsoft WOrd, with the document open, do you see 'Compatibility Mode'. If you do, re-save the document and make sure the 'Save as Type drop down is set to 'Word Document .docx' Then open the new .docx document and see if it is editable . . .

There is no setting that I know of that SHOULD be doing this sort of thing. Describe the exact process you are using to try to open the files. If there is an error message, we need the FULL and EXACT error message text.
