Typing French accents

I often type accent aigu using ctrl+alt and pressing e at the same time which is simple and I like it to write Pétanque. What I want to know is the equivalent procedure for typing accent grave (and other accents). The internet gives other methods but not mine. I cannot remember where I found it years ago. Grateful for guidance from Suzie.

Answer

For accent aigu, press Ctrl+' then type the vowel, e.g. Ctrl+' followed by a results in á

For accent grave, press Ctrl+` then the vowel. Ctrl+` followed by a results in à

For accent circonflexe, press Ctrl+Shift+6 (Ctrl+^), then the vowel. Ctrl+Shift+6 followed by o results in ô

For a cédille, press Ctrl+, followed by c: ç

For an umlaut, press Ctrl+Shift+; (Ctrl+:) followed by the vowel: Ctrl+Shift+; followed by u results in ü

You can see all these and more by selecting Insert > Symbol > More Symbols...
