"This task is currently locked ..." issue on SharePoint Office 365

Hi,

Hope this is the right place for this question.

I'm using SharePoint on Office 365 for workflow management and I'm frequently encountering the following error when trying to complete a workflow task "This task is currently locked by a running workflow and cannot be edited.". This seems like an old issue for which there are several possible solutions regarding the SharePoint Central Administration (which is unavailable in Office 365).

I suspect the root cause is that several tasks are initiated at the same time, but this is just a guess.

Does anyone have any idea how I might go about solving this problem?

Much obliged.

Roded

Thanks for the reply.

However, as we're using a Microsoft hosted SharePoint site, none of the suggestions can apply since there is not access to the SharePoint services and such.

Hi Roded,

You can try to verify your guess via only triggering one task and share with us the results.

If the issue persists, to clarify the situation, I'd like to confirm the following information:

1. The Platform type of the workflow.

2. Please provide us with detailed steps of the workflows you created so that we can try to reproduce the issue from our side for investigation.

3. How do you get the error message?

4. The screenshots of the error message.
To upload screenshots, click Use rich formatting in this thread and select Insert/Edit Media.

Thanks,
Hale

Hi Hale,

The original issue applied to a workflow of the 2010 platform, I have since changed the workflow to the 2013 platform so it would process all tasks serially with no tasks created in parallel.

If my memory serves me correctly, I've noticed the issue in the new format of the workflow as well, more so when working on the item/workflow on two tabs; but this is just guesswork.

The problem always occurs when trying to complete a task, in which case SharePoints reports that the task is already locked (while the locked task never completes).

Since originally posting the question, the issue has ceased in both of my versions of the workflow which is somewhat disappointing as this is a real issue, whether if related to how the workflow is defined or to some environmental factor.

I'll update this question if it reoccurs.

Hi again,

The issue occurred again.

This time on a serial 2013 workflow (which initiates a 2010 workflow which creates tasks).

Sorry to say that I can't ascertain the reason for the task locking, but I can confirm that a problem exists.

Hi Roded,

For narrowing down this issue, I'd like to confirm the following things:
1. Are these workflows created by SharePoint Designer?
2. If you create the same workflow both in a separate site and the previous site which has this issue, will you encounter the same issue?
3. Do all the workflows in your SharePoint Online sites have this issue?
4. Do all the sites have this issue?
5. Could you share the problematic workflows with us?

Can you also provide us with the screenshot of the error message mentioned above? To post a picture, click Use rich formatting>Insert/Edit Media in the thread page.

Best regards,
Tim

Hi Roded,

Do the workflows work well now? If not, please post back with the information mentioned in my last post at your convenience.

Best regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the replies.

Here are the answers I can currently provide:

1) Yes, SharePoint Designer was used for the creation of the workflows.

2) We currently do not have a local site to try these workflows on (originally, we migrated to SharePoint Online for the availability of 2013 workflows).

3) I currently don't have enough data to answer this unfortunately. The issue is quite dispersed in its occurrences.

4) We're working with only one site.

5) Yes I can (via Visio files I assume?); but only in a week or so after a certain presentation for which these workflows have been created. In a week I can share both the workflow files as well as the site itself (currently running in a SharePoint Online trial).

As for the screenshot, I'll attach it once I encounter the issue again. But it isn't very informative except in saying that the task is currently locked.
