"Sync Services has encountered a problem and needs to close"

When I use Entourage 2008, I receive the following error message: 

 

“Microsoft Sync Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.”

 

What does this error mean and how can I fix it?

This issue is commonly due to corrupt sync preferences. If you’re not using Sync Services, follow the steps below to disable the Sync Services, this will often resolve the issue:

 

  1. Start Entourage. If you’re unable to open Entourage, move onto the next solution.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click Sync Services on the left hand side.
  4. Click to clear all boxes then click OK.
