Which version and build of Office are you using? See File, Account for the information. That behavior usually indicated the connected experiences are not enabled. I had a client last week with the same symptoms and when I enabled connected experiences, the spelling suggestions came up.

In Word for Windows, click File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings. In the Privacy Settings dialog box, scroll down to the connected experiences category.

Alternatively, click File > Account > Manage Settings (I believe that Diane Poremsky already mentioned this option).

Are you using the office software installed on your Windows computer? (You posted in the desktop software forum for Windows.) In any office app: File > Account > Manage Settings to open the dialog. The option is there - near the bottom. https://filestore.community.support.microsoft.com/api/images/12a7de6e-c7fe-4045-b2a9-c8ac8cad09ec?upload=true

It still does not work. I turned on Connected Experiences and still it underlines the misspelled work with a wavy red line but when I right click no suggestions.
