Specific sender's email comes up as attachment .eml

Hi Team,

I am having issue with one of our sender's email. Whenever he sends us an email whole body of the message is send as attachment .eml once we open that .eml file then only we are able to see the main email.

I tried with adding up the sender's email to allowed list. All the policy excludes the sender email address from the filter. But still we are getting those emails as attachment.

Requesting for your help.

Thank You

Milan

Hi Milan,

I understand that your requirement is to receive the specific sender’s email as a normal email instead of a .eml file.

The attachment format should be controlled by the sender side, different receiving programs support different formats. You can suggest the sender try the following:

  1. Create a new profile via this article: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/829918
  2. If he is using an Office 365 account, let him/her log into OWA to send emails, is there any improvement?
  3. Try sending emails from a Gmail/Hotmail account, does the issue persist?
  4. If the sender is using Outlook for windows client to send emails, let him/her hold the Windows key and press R, then type outlook.exe /safe in the Open field and click OK. Check if the issue is related to some add-ins in his Outlook program.

However, we still need more details to further look into the issue. If all above doesn’t work, please provide the information below:

  1. What email account does the sender use, Gmail, Hotmail.com or Office 365 account? If it is an Office 365 account, is he in your organization?
  2. Which app does the sender use to send emails, via Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac or OWA?
  3. Do you receive the .eml file when the sender replies to an email, composes a new email or forwards an email? I need to confirm what the exact situation is.
  4. What if he/her send emails to others, does the issue persist?
  5. If possible, please provide a screenshot about the scenario and one .eml file in a Private Message I sent to you, you can access it via the link below:

Hi Lance,

I just want to make one thing clear, sender is not sending any kind of attachment, they are sending normal email which comes up as .eml attachment in our end. And to read that mail we have to open that eml file.

They are sending from there own domain. And they already confirmed that everythings fine on their end.

I have send you the screenshot and eml file in private message.

Thank You

Milan

Hi Milan,

Thanks for your clarification.

I understand what you are meaning. However, based on the .eml file, there is a signature signed by the sender.

Which means the email was added digital signature to outgoing messages. As a recipient, there is nothing you can do to prevent this behavior.

Please involve the sender or the sender's organization admin in this thread.

Best Regards,

Lance

Hi Lance,

I just confirmed with Arpa (Sender) as per him this only happens to us not to everyone whoever he sends an email too.

So, he is bit concern that there might be some issue on our side.

Thanks

Milan

Hi Milan,

Not really. I think the issue still should be addressed at the sender side.

You can suggest the sender check the following:

  1. In Outlook, click the File tab.
  2. Click Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings.
  3. On the E-mail Security tab, under Encrypted e-mail, check whether the two Encrypt contents and attachments for outgoing messages & Add digital signature to outgoing messages check boxes has been selected.

If the two box has not been selected and the issue persists, there must be some S/MIME for message signing and encryption settings configured on the sender side and the configuration should be applied to the whole organization.

Just as I mentioned above, as a recipient, there is nothing you can do to prevent this behavior. You may need to confirm if the sender’s organization has enabled the S/MIME settings.

Best Regards,

Lance

Lance,

I am having the same problem, but have multiple email boxes, with the same domain, only one of which shows the email as an attachment. Due to this I am almost 100% certain it is on the inbox side.
