sent items not being saved in the Windows 10 mail app on PC

I have several accounts linked to the Windows 10 mail app (the one that has the blue mail icon in Windows 10).

About two weeks ago my sent items stopped being saved but only for the gmail accounts, my other email accounts are still working fine.

If I send from another device the emails are saved and appear in the sent box for that account in the Windows 10 mail app. It is only items sent from the the Windows 10 mail app itself that are not saved.

How do I get the sent items to save for gmail accounts in the Windows 10 mail app?

If in the mail app you create a new mail and send it to yourself, is it received?

No, if I send an email to the same gmail account but yes if I send an email to a different account

To clarify-

if I send from gmail 1 to gmail 1 no message is received in inbox and nothing shows in sent items for gmail 1

if I send from gmail 1 to gmail 2 (or another account) the message appears in gmail 2 inbox (or other account inbox) but nothing shows up in gmail 1 sent items

Yes, visible in my "inbox" and "sent" item folders.
