Sent Items folder in Outlook 2016 disappeared after updating to Windows 10 version 2004

Sent Items folder in Outlook 2016 disappeared after updating to Windows 10 version 2004, and all sent messages were moved to Contacts. Outbox folder also disappeared. If a message is composed and sent, it goes into Contacts.  Also, Outlook and Skype for Business logs out automatically and prompts for user name and password. How can these be rectified?
AT, have you tried repairing Office>Right click on Start Button>Apps and Features>Scroll down to Office 2016>Click on it>Choose Modify>Choose Quick repair.  If that does not help go back and choose Online repair which includes as part of the process reinstalling Office so you will need to sign into your Office Account during process.

Hi Ron,

Quick Repair did not do anything. However, I haven't tried doing Online Repair yet, waiting for advice from our corporate IT. Overnight though, the Sent items folder has reappeared but it is still in Outlook Contacts and the action to move the folder back to the mail folders list is not working/usable. Also, sent messages are still being saved in it, still in Contacts. I don't know if Microsoft is working to rectify this, as I don't think I am the only one experiencing this issue after updating Windows 10 to version 2004.

Whilst you wait try running the System File Checker can't do any harm. Right click on Start menu>Command Prompt (Admin)>Type>sfc   /scannow     press enter/return key (note space between sfc and /scannow

Hi all,

I am having the same problem (although with Outlook 2019) and also, like AT after the update to Windows 10 v2004. I could give a bit more color to what I have discovered:

- the first time I ran the Outlook client today, the Deleted Items were in a folder called Outbox. I have fixed that by running

outlook.exe /resetfolders

outlook.exe /resetfodernames

- the Sent Items folder is now in the Contacts view, showing each sent item as a Contact entry with the "Name is unavailable" title

- the Outbox folder is in the Calendar view

- a few hours ago, I could still see the correct view in OWA but now the changes have been perpetuated also there:

- for the moment I can still see the correct structure in the Gmail app on Android.

I have also tried to delete the email profile and to recreate it but that didn't help at all.

Did you ever get a solution to this problem, I have a client with exactly the same problem, I'm not far away from deleting his mailbox completely and creating a new one!!

Hi Giles,

yes, I got an answer, I hope the Microsoft support won't mind me sharing it.

  1. Download and extract the MFCMAPI tool from http://mfcmapi.codeplex.com.
  2. Open MFCMAPI too.l Launch mfcmapi.exe and click OK through the intro screen.
  3. On the Session menu, click Logon.
  4. Select the Outlook profile for the affected mailbox, and click OK.
  5. Double-click the email address which represents the desired mailbox.
  6. Make sure you are you are opening it with online settings, tools -> options scroll down to MDB_ONLINE and MAPI_NO_CACHE check the boxes on
  7. Go to session and login select your profile
  8. Highlight the mailbox where Outbox turned to Calendar
  9. Click on the MDB tab and then Open Store
  10. Expand Root Container
  11. Expand Top of Information Store
  12. Highlight Outbox on the left pane
  13. On the right pane scroll down to  PR_CONTAINER_CLASS and double click to edit
  14. In the Ansi TextBox change the IPF.Appointment to IPF.Note
  15. Click OK
  16. Wait couple of seconds and open Outlook click on Outbox and it will open as Outbox should and not as a Calendar, (if the  icon still show as a calendar, just close Outlook and open again)
I have done the same for the Sent Items folder which fixed that as well.

Also, I had the problem that when clicking in the Windows Outlook client on Outbox, I was getting a Calendar popping up. I fixed that by changing in MFCMAPI in the Outbox properties the property with code 0x36E00102 to the value of the same property of Inbox and Sent Items.

Hope this helps...

Hi @Giles,

@dragos is correct, this is the method that our IT guys utilized in correcting the issue with my Outlook. After using the MCFMapi tool and correcting the issue, they made sure no recurrence would happen by creating a new profile, exported all the files from my old profile into the new one then deleted the old profile. I don't know if this could be considered overkill, but it worked for me.

Thank you so much, that appears to have fixed my problem, I've worked with both local Exchange installations and Office 365 system for years and never seen this one before, no idea how the guy managed it but at least it's working normally again now.  Thank you.
