"Redo" shortcut Ctrl+Y vs Ctrl+Shift+Z

A shortcut key of a "redo" action is now Ctrl+Y in all Microsoft Office products. However, a lot of other programs like Matlab, Adobe Illustrator, and even old versions of Microsoft Office had "redo" action shortcut key as Ctrl+Shift+Z.

That makes me confuse and I keep press Ctrl+Shift+Z for "redo." But the bigger problem is that this action (whatever it is) deletes all traces of my actions! From that point, if I press Ctrl+Y for "redo," it doesn't work.

For example, suppose I did four actions in order: A - B - C - D, which can be "type something" or "copy and paste something" or "format something." I realized I want to go back to the point B. I pressed Ctrl+Z two times. It's now at point B. But I also realized that point C looks better. I press Ctrl+Shift+Z by accident. Nothing happens. After then, even if I click Ctrl+Y, I cannot go back to points C or D.

I tried to customize the shortcut keys, but "redo" and "undo" actions cannot be customized (answer from Microsoft Support agent). "Redo" action should be really done by BOTH Ctrl+Y and Ctrl+Shift+Z to avoid any confusion. At least, the current Ctrl+Shift+Z should not delete any action traces I had. This is really a problem that needs to be fixed soon!!!

It already has three keyboard shortcuts but you can assign Ctrl+Shift+Z to it as well.

The command is under All Commands and is

EditRedoOrRepeat.

Thanks very much, it works and it saved my life! I don't know why I couldn't find EditRedoOrRepeat before, but in any case, a very unintuitive and long name for this simple action Redo.

Separate issue, but it seems that I can customize shortcuts only in Word, not in PowerPoint. I'd appreciate it if you could advise. I found this instruction for Mac (link below) which actually did not work for my Mac PowerPoint (I tried Insert New Equation), and I cannot find any instruction for Windows PowerPoint.

I believe Word is the only Office program that lets you customize keyboard shortcuts. This applies to Windows versions of Office, at least. (I have no experience with Word for Mac.)

However, you can start separate questions in the sections for PowerPoint and Excel to find out more.
