Printing as PDF from Word/Office 365 has white vertical margins/borders

This question has cropped up many times and none of the replies to those locked threads provide the correct answer. So here it is:

In Windows, go to : Printers & Scanners > Microsoft Print to PDF > Printing Preferences

Click on the 'Advanced' tab

Change the 'Paper Size' from 'Letter' to whatever print size you use. Im in the UK, so print using the 'A4' format.

Click 'OK'

Now click 'Apply'.

That's it! Now when you save your document as a PDF document no more white lines.

Hi MrPaulNorman, Thank you for raising the issue and providing the solution to the Microsoft Community. I will provide extra info in case future users want to modify their margins before printing in a Word document too: Create custom margins: Select Layout > Margins. Choose Custom Margins. Adjust the margin values using the up and down arrows. Click OK when done. Kindly note that this is a user-to-user forum, we are users helping other users, we aren't Microsoft employees and neither are we Microsoft agents. Best regards, Amadeusz

The issue is nothing to do with Margins or printing to paper.

By default, Windows configures Microsoft Print to PDF to use the US Letter format. Change the margins inside Word all you want, but doing so will not prevent your exported PDF documents having white lines down the left and right sides due to the PDF being created in US letter format, even though one selects A4 during the print process.

I just posted here to help others who search for a solution.
