PowerPoint Slide Show unresponsive flipping 2-in-1 to tablet mode

Hi,

I have Office 2016 on a Lenovo Yoga 14 2-in-1 with Windows 10 and a Wacom-compatible pen.

If I am using PowerPoint in laptop mode and flip the screen to tablet mode, PowerPoint enters Slide Show mode but it is completely unresponsive to touch. The only way out of it is either to flip back to tablet mode or use my pen to bring up the Slide Show menu. If I work in laptop mode and go into Slide Show mode then touch works. Why? That's a nonsensical behavior. I want to swipe from one slide to another via touch and I want to escape Slide Show mode. In fact, I don't see why it enters Slide Show mode anyway and doesn't allow me to do anything.

There are some really bizarre and annoying 'features' that have been introduced in the recent versions of all Office programs. This one is particularly frustrating and makes no sense whatsoever.

How can I stop this from happening?

Thanks,

John.

Hi JohnMcR,

We’re willing to help to solve this issue. Here is what you can do:

1. Check if the issue occurring with just this file or not, how about other PowerPoint file?

2.  Have a try Safe Mode ( Start->run->powerpnt /safe) to open this file in order to eliminate the possibility of some add-ins.

3. since we couldn’t repro this issue your post, screenshots for step-by-step is better for us accurately catch what you describe.

4. We'd like that you can provide the Office version to help us take a test.

Please let us know the result.

Regards,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

Thank you. I have been testing it.

I cannot create a screenshot because the problem itself causes the laptop to be unresponsive. i.e., PowerPoint enters Slide Show mode and is not responsive to touch and, because the laptop is in tablet mode, the keyboard is disabled.

I have noticed the following behavior:

I can use an external mouse

I can use the pen (but only to bring up the Slide Show mode menu which lets me exit)

Neither of these help with my problem though since I need to be able to use Slide Show with my laptop configured as a tablet and by touch only.

John.

Hi JohnMcR,

Although you flipped the laptop into Tablet, Win 10  is still in laptop mode.

1.So before you flip the laptop into Tablet, please  turn on the “Tablet Mode”  (Notification->Tablet Mode) and test.

This is an action which can eliminate the factor of the windows mode.

Check if this issue is caused by windows mode.
2. Please also check the Slide type.
Slide Show->Set Up Slide Show->Presented by a speaker(full screen)

3. If there has the choose “Make windows more touch-friendly  when using your device as a table” (system setting->Tablet Mode), please also turn on(some previous of Win 10 has no this choose).

Please let us know the result.

Regards,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I tried all your suggestions but nothing changed. (Option 3 isn't present on my system.)

Thanks,

John.

Hi JohnMcR,

Sorry for any inconvenience.

The latest Window 10 version is 1709, Can you try these steps bellow to see if it useful?

  1. Click on the start menu and in the search box type 'Windows Update'.
  2. Chose 'Windows Update Settings'.
  3. Press ‘Check Online’.

If your Office is in Monthly Channel (Targeted), please try Update to the latest Office Version.

  1. Open any Office 2016 app, such as Word, and create a new document.
  2. Go to File > Account (or Office Account if you opened Outlook 2016).
  3. Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now

Note: You may need to click Enable Updates first if you don't see the Update Now option right away.

We'd like that you try Repair Online to see if it can fix the issue:

Start< Control Panel< Programs and Features.  In the programs list, right click Microsoft Office 365 and click on change->Online Repair->Repair; It takes a little longer time, and please keep online.

Or turn off the “tablet mode” after you flip the laptop to tablet as a workaround.
If the issue still exists, I suggest submitting your feedback in Office 365 UserVoice. Providing your feedback is the best way to let related team hear your voice, which will help better our products and services.

Regards,

Jerry

This failed miserably.

I updated to 1709 and then checked Office. I tried the repair and it failed halfway through. I had to completely uninstall Office (losing all my settings.) Once it was running, I tried PowerPoint - same problem with Slide Show. Your suggestion to disable tablet mode after flipping is impossible because the laptop is unresponsive. I opened Outlook and it said it had to download all my emails (2GB) so instead I reimaged my laptop from a backup I (wisely) made before the 1709 update. This time Outlook said my .ost was old and so I have to download all my emails anyway. And I'm no closer to running a slide show in tablet mode.

I'll follow your suggestion re. UserVoice.

(I spent 12hrs today on this...)
