often, when I create a Word document, a plus sign (+) within a circle appears on the left page margin. I cannot figure out what feature or benefit this has to the document and cannot find it in SEARCH. Anyone have information?
Click the ¶ icon on the Home tab to display nonprinting marks. You will see any inserted tables more clearly because each cell will be terminated by an end-of-cell marker and each row will be terminated by an end-of-row marker (¤).
You can take a screen shot and upload it here.
Alternatively, upload an example document to OneDrive or Dropbox, make the document public and post a "share" link in this thread.

If you activate the View tab of the ribbon, is Outline in the Views tab highlighted? If so, the + signs are outlining buttons - you can use them to expand/collapse parts of the document.
Select Print Layout to get out of Outline view.
