Picture captions in Word

I am having difficulty deleting picture captions in Word 2013. I do the following: click on Insert Caption, then Labels, select the caption I want to delete, click Delete Label. I should then be able to click on Cancel in order to remove the label but after I click Delete Label Cancel changes to Close and I am unable to delete the label. I have spent a frustrating morning trying to sort this. Your help much appreciated.
Which label are you trying to delete? Note that you can't delete the built-in ones (Figure, Table, Equation).

Hello, I am trying to delete labels that I have entered using New Label, not the built in ones.

I haven't seen a problem with deleting custom caption labels. I can do that by clicking Delete and then the Close button to exit the dialog box.

It just doesn't work for me. I can delete the caption using backspace but the space where the caption was remains.

I assumed you wanted to delete the label, but you are talking about deleting actual captions in a document?

When you add a caption to a wrapped object, Word puts the caption in a text box. You can just select the text box and press Delete.

If you just want a caption without a label, you don't need to use the Insert Caption feature; you can just type the caption (inline for an inline graphic, in a text box for a wrapped one). If you apply the Caption style, it will be easier to create a list of illustrations.
