Outlook Search Bar - How can I move it back to where it's supposed to be?

Why has the Outlook search bar moved, and is there a way to get it back to where it's supposed to be?

Call me old fashioned, but I hate peoples new ideas being forced upon you. If some people want a change then give them the option to change but don't force the change upon others. Offer both options.

I'm finding the new location of the Outlook search bar unusable. I categorize my incoming emails, and I used to be able to just click on the search bar and then click the the colour/category i wanted to view, and up would pop a list of emails in the category. Now I click on the search bar and the drop down immediately covers over the toolbar, forcing me to click away to get to my category option.

Equally frustrating is the search bar seems to be disconnected from the page on view. by this I mean it doesn't show any results as I'm typing, I have to hit enter to see any relevant search returns. This seems such a step back from what I have been used to.
My workflow has slowed down dramatically do to this one change.

I really want the search bar where it used to be - How do I get it back??

Hello MartinRuff1

Your not alone in your sentiment about the new location for the SearchBox but unfortunately there is no user-setting option to change the location.

You can follow the description on the topic that details some registry changes as outlined in the following thread on Outlook MVP Diane Poremsky's forum

Delete two keys to get the old search field back - and a smaller nav pane.

This is a horrible location, I use search all day long to find things in Outlook, now it looks like some 3rd party lookup function.

Put it back where it was!

Thank you for posting the work-around, but Microsoft, seriously. Why did you think moving the search was a good idea?

  • It is extremely sloppy and covers the ribbon when activated.
  • The Search "Suggestions" have never once been helpful.
  • The search defaults to "Current Mailbox". Where is the option to select "All Mailboxes"? "Current Folder"?
  • The Search bar keeps "crashing" especially when pasting data from another app like Excel. Typing a space bar in the search just randomly stops working and instead starts rotating through emails in the inbox.
  • No one wants users in their org doing registry updates on their own.

Another vote to put it back where it was!! Please!

I have to remote in to my computer and now the search bar is half hidden behind the remote desktop task bar at the top of the screen.

This new search is terrible.

I can't filter anymore the way I need to.

Please fix and restore functionality ASAP!

Matt

I agree. A work around for your specific problem is that you can resize and move the blue bar at the top by grabbing the edges with your cursor to shrink it or clicking and holding it to move it to the right/left. You can also hide it, but I don't like that setting. Hopefully, they either move the search bar or give us the option to make it go back.

I would love to know how Microsoft programmers, CEOs, etc. would feel if someone just showed up in their systems and started randomly moving stuff around, changing things and removing functionality!

For crying out loud, give your CUSTOMERS the OPTION to swap to your so-called "New & Enhanced features", rather than foisting them off on us to be your guinea pigs!

I agree with everyone. Terrible location.  Why force a change on all users!?  Thank you for the workaround - which is not for the average user.  Microsoft needs to make this an enhancement that can be enabled or not by the user.
