That's not it, and I've tried it multiple times. Like I said in the original post, "it makes any profile I add that account to completely unusable".

It is not a corrupt profile as it happens for me on a brand new install, two separate profiles but doesn't start crashing until the sometime into synching. Outlook is currently unusable.

I finally got mine to work by doing the following.

Thank you very much for the update and detailed explaination. After a week or so of banging my head against the touch screen I suddenly realised, an hour after posting here, that Outlook was offering me a POP3 alternative. I know the Mail function on Win8 doesn't support POP3 and hadn't realised Outlook still does.

So this morning I deleted the IMAP profiles and set up the POP3 ones and hey presto no crashing and a girlfriend with 7,000 unready emails in her in box. I on the other hand still run Win2000 with Outlook2000 SR1. apart from needing to watch my .pst size it all works as it has done for many years although I now get the urge to swoosh the screen.

The problem is linked to IMAP accounts. Go to File, Account Settings and double click on all affected IMAP account. Click More Settings button then switch to the Advanced tab.

In the Root folder path field type Inbox. Exit the dialog and perform a send and receive. (If the Inbox is not your root folder, setting Inbox as the root won't work, as it will hide all of the other folders.)

Finally a suggestion that works, and so simple:-)  Thank You!

Agree the problem is related to IMAP config, but setting the root folder to Inbox had the unfortunate effect of *hiding* the [Gmail] (system) folders like Gmail/Sent, Gmail/Trash.  I do occasionally need to refer to those, too.

But this gave me a great hint.  Here's the (black magic) process that worked for me:

1) set root folder to Inbox, as above (using Control Panel / Mail)

2) Restart Outlook.  Observe it hangs forever ("not responding").  I have a lot of mail in gmail so I let it sit for > 30 min.  But it never completed.

3) In control panel / mail, set root folder back to blank (as I think it originally was).

4) Restart Outlook.  Observe it *still* hangs.

5) Restart Outlook in *safe* mode (hold Control key down while clicking on shortcut to start it).  Observe Outlook opens quickly, and populates the IMAP folder hierarchy.  Consider just running Outlook in safe mode forever more....

6) (fingers crossed)  Restart Outlook normally.  Now it works!  And it's been working fine ever since!

Thanks again for the very useful hint bout IMAP!  From the name OUTMIME.DLL, I was thinking the problem was a particular ill-formed MIME message that I was going to have to identify and remove...

I didn't need to restart again after step 3.  After I removed "Inbox" from the advanced tab again, everything started syncing again, and all was well.  Thanks!
