Org Chart Connecting Lines in Powerpoint 2010

I am having to recreate an org chart in the new 2010 version of PPT.  I am having difficulty adding connecting lines to the boxes.  I tried following the instructions from the on-line help, but that information was pretty useless.

Can anyone help me out here?

I tried following the video, but my boxes don't show the connect points, so when I preview the page, the lines aren't completely attached to the boxes.

Exactly what steps are you taking to create this org chart?  Basically, are you trying to place each shape manually, or are you using SmartArt to automate it partially?

If it is a simple chart, you may want to use SmartArt. That will automate line creation.  Org charts are typically a "Hierarchy" type chart.  Here are some "how to" tips about SmartArt:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/where-can-i-find-microsoft-office-organization-chart-HA010377203.aspx?CTT=1 - Organization Chart feature is not installed by default

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/create-an-organization-chart-HA010354860.aspx?CTT=5&origin=HA010377231 -  If you want to illustrate the reporting relationships in your company or organization, you can create a SmartArt graphic that uses an organization chart layout, such as Organization Chart/

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/keyboard-shortcuts-for-smartart-graphics-HA102749365.aspx

The keyboard shortcuts described here refer to the U.S. keyboard layout. Keys on other layouts might not correspond exactly to the keys on a U.S. keyboard.

Although this tip is not specific to creating org charts, it has a lot of useful information you can use:

Using and Creating Graphics in Microsoft Office 2010 - 1

http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1649256

This chapter provides an overview of the options for adding graphics to your Office application files. It also looks at how to insert shapes, SmartArt graphics, images, and clip art as well as some of the new features that Office 2010 provides for working with graphics within the applications.

Animate your SmartArt graphic

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/animate-your-smartart-graphic-HA010354867.aspx

You can create moving, animated SmartArt graphics to provide additional emphasis or show your information in phases. You can animate your entire SmartArt graphic or only an individual shape in your SmartArt graphic. For example, you can make each circle of a Venn diagram fly in one at a time or create an organization chart that fades in by level.

Creating an Organization Chart - Excel MR

The graphics capabilities of Excel are flexible enough that you can use the program to create organization charts. Here's how quick overview of how easy creating such a chart can be.  This tip (6118) applies to Excel versions: 2007 | 2010. You can find a version of this tip for the older menu interface of Excel here: Creating an Organization Chart.

If your chart is not simple, you can create it "manually" using Insert tab > Illustrations group > Shapes dropdown.  If you want to connect elements, you have to use "smart connectors", rather than simple lines and arrows. The first thing about using connectors is you have to use a "Drawing Canvas".

Summary: If you add shapes to the drawing canvas, you can use connector lines between those shapes. Here’s how to add them to your drawing efforts. (This tip works with Word 2007.)

I've read all of this information -- searching for any on-line help was the first place I went.  I tried to follow the instructions, but to no avail.  My boxes don't have the little dots around the perimeter that show up when I try to connect lines (like used to happen in the old PPT version).  When I do get a connecting line to form on the page, it's not aligned properly and I can't seem to realign it.

I've resigned myself to the fact that Microsoft really fd up with this whole 2010 version on all of the programs, but mostly with PPT.

How about answering my question?!?  From what you said it sounds like you are trying to create the org chart "manually". by placing individual Shapes and using "lines" to connect them.  Is that right?

(Ignore the drawing box info, that appears to be specific to Word)

IMPORTANT POINT: You have to use "Connector" lines, not just pick any line from the options.
