Open Dialogue Box Viewing Preferences

I have 2 identical iMac's same model and same OSX.

When you hit command+o it opens this dialogue box. One machine it has "date added"...

The other machine shows "date modified"....

I can not figure out how to change the preferences in the 1st machine to the same as the 2nd machine. I do not care about date added it is completely useless. I need to change date added to date modified.

Any ideas? I really appreciate the help.

Different Finder window settings are being used on the Macs. The top one is set to group by one of the Date values as shown in this screen shot:

The other is set to None.

Hi Bob,

I understand that, I should have changed the grouping for the screenshots in the original post.

I still need to figure out how to get the column header to change from "Date Added" to "Date Modified".

Okay while in finder and showing your Folder (as show as above).

  1. Click view in main menu
  2. Next click show view options
  3. Now click on the open Folder window.
You will now see this window:

  4. Now check and uncheck what items you want to show.
  5. And while you have the folder open you can drag and drop the header titles in any order you desire.

Hi Phillip,

In the "finder" view options the machine was already set to show "date modified" and not "date added". In the screen shot below you can see I have finder view option open and the options I have selected but in the excel window in the back ground it shows "date added" and date modified is no where to be found.

Right-click anywhere in the column headings bar in the Open dialog then select Date Modified from the contextual menu:

Of course, you can clear the check for Date Added in the same way :-)

I tried that but it will not bring up anything when I right-click on the column headers. Any ideas why you can and I can't?

My bad - I had forgotten that Office 2011 doesn't support the feature (perhaps because it's Cocoa-based) even though it's available in actual Finder windows.

Instead, this should work: Widen the dialog window to display the additional columns. You then should be able to drag the columns into the order you prefer if you'd rather not leave the dialog window that wide.

No matter how large I make the open dialogue window in excel it still on shows Name, Date Added, Kind, Size. I can rearrange those all I want but I can'd add "date modified".

Well, I don't know what to tell you... I haven't done anything special on this Mac that would have any bearing on it. I'll be glad to dig a little deeper, but to do so I'll need to know;

  • The exact version & update level of OS X on each Mac
  • The exact version & update level of Office 2011 on each Mac
  • Whether either Mac has any 2rd party file mgmt. utilities, if so which utility on which Mac.
