OneNote sync not logging in

I use OneNote for Windows 10 on my Desktop PC and Laptop and I need the two to sync between each other. That has worked quite well for a while but recently I ran into some issues. Whenever I start either one of my devices and open OneNote, in the top right corner it will say "Saved offline (sign in required)", but also my name in the purple bar above, implying I am somehow signed in and not signed in to OneNote at the same time.

Then I'll click on that text, it'll open a popup with a button that says "Sign in". I'll click on that button and go through the sign in process. After I complete the sign in, I'm still not signed in, but get a loading circle on my cursor that lasts indefinitely and disappears when I move the mouse. I can repeat that process any amount of times without change.

I've had temporary success in the past by logging out of OneNote completely and logging back in, but that takes a long time since all the Notebooks have to be reopened and one time I had login issues after that and couldn't use OneNote until after a restart (which took over an hour in that case, but I'm not sure the issues are related).

I suspect this issue might have something to do with changing the e-mail adress associated with my microsoft account recently, but I'm not sure.

Also I'd add screenshots to this, but for some reason the upload always fails, so I hope you can help me regardless.

Hello Luca Nie

Thank you for your contribution to the Microsoft Community.

I understand that you can't sync OneNote between two computers.

I'd like to know if it's a problem with OneNote itself, a Microsoft account, or a network issue.

Does this only happen in OneDrive? or does it happen everywhere you need to log in to your Microsoft account? Please try logging in to other Office components and try to log in to the Edge browser.

You mentioned that you tried logging out and logging back into OneNote and had a brief period of success. I'm guessing it's a network issue. Please try the following options to alleviate your situation.

  • Change your network connection
It can be switched to a mobile hotspot, and if there are other networks, you can change the network several times

  • Change the DNS
Start > Set up > Network & Internet > double-click to open "Change Adapter Options"
Right-click "Connected Network" to open "Properties" > double-click to open "Internet Protocol Version 4"
Check the following DNS server addresses> Preferred DNS Server (4.2.2.1), Alternate DNS Server (4.2.2.2) > OK
Try again after changing it, and remember to change it to automatic when it is successful

  • Reset IE
Tap the windows+R keys and enter inetcpl.cpl to open Internet Options
Click "Connection" in the upper menu bar, click "LAN Settings", check "Auto-detect settings", and make sure that the remaining two are unchecked, and click "OK".
Click "Advanced" on the far right of the upper menu bar, drop down the slider, check "Reset advanced settings", click "Apply" in the lower right corner, and then click "OK".

In addition, we have received reports that many of our users have recently experienced difficulties logging in. We've received feedback from some of our users, and the next solution may be temporary. We're not sure if this will work for you, but you can give it a try while you wait.

  • Change your computer's interface language to United States English.
Try signing in to the Office app again.
If the office application is running, change the system language back.

Also, you can let me know in your replies if you have any updates or findings in the process of using and testing.

If there is a mistake in my understanding, please describe it in more detail. Looking forward to your further reply so that we can serve you better.

Best wishes,

Hello Rel,

thanks for your reply.

I have no problems signing into my microsoft account anywhere else. I'm not even sure it's an issue with the sign in process, because it goes through without any problem, I'm just not signed in afterwards (or at least it doesn't say I am).

I tried the things you told me but none of it seems to fix it. Also I find a network issue to be unlikely since the problem occurs on three separate devices, two connected via WiFi, one via LAN, regardless of the time or the network I'm in.

Also my system language is already set to English (US).

Lastly, I just found a way to get the screenshots to upload:

After I enter my PIN in that last window, the whole popup closes and I just get the loading circle, but the top right still looks like in the first screenshot.

Based on your screenshots, I see the error code E0000024. This means that the login credentials are missing.

I wonder if this is only happening in this one notebook, or if all notebooks are not syncing? Please create a new notebook for testing.

If only a notebook cannot be synchronized, log in to OneNote Online on the browser side to access the notebook and check whether the access is normal. If the display on OneNote Online is normal, please close the notebook on your Mac, and then click Open In OneNote Online to see if you can successfully open and sync the notebook on Mac.

You mentioned that you can log in normally in other apps.

As a temporary solution, you can create a new notebook directly in OneNote Online and copy and paste the content into it.

This is happening with all notebooks I have. I tried to create a new notebook as you said. First I had to go through a sign in process like the one on the screenshots above again. Then it failed. This is the message I got:

Maybe this can help you in figuring it out.

I know I don't have a notebook by that name yet, so it can't be that.

Based on your screenshots, your notes are stored in https://d.docs.live.net/. So I understand that you are using the Microsoft 365 integration. Microsoft 365 integration is based on the web-based version of Office. All created files are saved in the OneDrive cloud.

However, due to the recent update to the OneDrive web UI, the OneDrive functionality has been disrupted for some users. We've received feedback from users in various language communities about the same issue. We've filed it as a bug to the development team. Please be patient and wait for the issue to be fixed.

Based on feedback from them, you can try to add files using the OneDrive app on mobile.

Thank you for your understanding and support! If there is any progress on this issue, I will communicate with you.
