OneNote for Windows 10 Paste doesn't work with content cut/copied from within OneNote

Here is what works and doesn't:

  • I can cut/copy in another application (Office, Chrome Browser, Notepad++, etc) and paste into a OneNote for Windows page and things work fine -- pasted a table and all formatting came through fine.
  • But in OneNote for Windows (latest version downloaded today: Version 16001.11507.20006.0), if I try and cut/copy and then paste content from the same OneNote page or between Notebooks, nothing pastes.
    • I can take the data I copied/cut and paste it into another application.
    • For example, I cut and pasted into Notepad++. I then select the text in Notepad++ and cut it and is pastes fine into OneNote for Windows
  • Using OneNote 2016 I can cut/copy and then paste within a OneNote page - the same page I was trying to use above. Everything synched fine.
  • I also tried different Notebooks in OneNote for Windows and that didn't help either.

When did this occur?

This issue seems to have appeared in the last update or two of OneNote for Windows that I installed.

Windows version

I am running Windows 10 Pro, Version 1709, OS Build: 16299.1029 with recent Microsoft Patches installed.

Thanks in advance for any/all help.

Since the issue was with the OneNote for Windows product, I did uninstall that and reinstalled and the problem still persists.

I do not have the issue with OneNote 2016 from Office 365.

Is there a way to start OneNote for Windows in a "Safe" mode, as the Office products can? I didn't see a way to do that.

Thanks,

Brian

I am seeing the exact same issue.  It happens regardless of note / etc and restarting OneNote does nothing to help it.  Restarting my PC yesterday did help, but then it went right back to not working again today.

I can do the same workaround with Notepad.  It's clearly something wrong w/ OneNote for Windows10 and clipboard management.

Can't copy/paste from a web page and paste with right click mouse key to One Note without having to use keyboard Ctl+V or Ctrl+C.

This issue is very real, and updates do not seem to solve it.

Copy/paste is very inconsistent with OneNote for Windows app, more so with keyboard shortcuts.

Pasting into the UWP OneNote has been a hit or miss affair for many months for me.  It works fine for some of a day then refuses to paste or will paste something that I copied ages ago but is presumably in the clipboard history.   Closing and opening OneNote works most of the time but sometimes I have to reboot my device.

This is just one of many bugs in the UWP OneNote that never get addressed.

I've been experiencing this issue with OneNote for several months as well, but I cannot pinpoint exactly when it started. It's definitely a problem in the new version.

I'm able to copy and paste from any application to OneNote, or OneNote to any application, but I'm able to copy from OneNote to OneNote, even a single line down from where I'm working. It doesn't appear to matter what format the data is in; I've tried copying text, lists, table content.

It appears to be an issue with the "paste" function, maybe with formatting that's getting in the way? I've tried all the options for Default Paste Formatting and have experienced no difference.

Closing OneNote, killing every task related to anything OneNote in Task Manager->Details seems to solve the problem temporarily, but it's super annoying to do that every time.

Hi,

To add some precisions, it is linked with Onenote focus. If you copy anything while Onenote is minimized, nothing will paste or It will throw an error.

To make it work, you have to pull up Onenote application, then the other app on top of it, without maximizing, copy, then focus back in Onenote, then paste. Success!

So, this is really stupid and needs to be fixed.

Thanks,

I had an issue recently where my motherboard died on my laptop and I was given a laptop with a newer released version of Windows 10.

And guess what, no issues with OneNote and copy/pasting.

After my motherboard was replaced I checked and the version of Windows that is problematic with OneNote is

  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • Version 1803
  • OS Build 17134.950

I think something is corrupted in the installed OS where I occasionally get errors when I copy data that seems to be some sort of crash.

The OS that works is

  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • Version 1709
  • OS Build 16299.1146

I am getting my laptop reimaged in the next few days to see if a clean OS fixes the OneNote issue and some other strange issues I am having.
