officecdn.microsoft.com.edgesuite.net saturating my circuit

I need an explanation as to why my Office 365 clients (who do not use OneDrive/SharePoint/Exchange Online to sync data) over the last 6 hours have transferred over 30GB(?!) of data between the officecdn.microsoft.com.edgesuite.net and other delivery systems (2.tlu.dl.delivery.mp.microsoft.com, 7.au.download.windowsupdate.com, etc.) causing connectivity issues resulting from saturating my network.  I did not realized that when I decided to move our organization to the O365 platform, that I was going to need to dedicate a circuit for updates or create expanded firewall rules to moderate bandwidth to these services???!!!  This isn't a one time window either, this has been happening over the past week (until I firewalled the L7 connectivity to drop this traffic, which has the effect of not allowing users installed Office applications to authenticate.

I have read a number of posts with these same statistics and issues.  Is this an issue where MS rolls out a prepatch for a major release?

Hi IrvSic,

Based on my research, the high band usage may related to Office update service which runs as a scheduled task daily to check the Office 365 service for new updates.

To check if that scenario is related to that, I'd like to suggest you use group policy settings to make your user update Office clients from your local place. You can refer this link to do that. Please have a try and share with me your result.

For your reference: High traffic from officecdn.microsoft.com.
