Do you have any anti-virus software installed?
Please try disabling the firewall/anti-virus and try updating the office
You can also try changing the network

Unfortunately this is in an office environment and disabling the anti-virus or changing the network is not possible.
We have Trend/Officescan for anti-virus if that makes any difference.
I've seen this type of answer before and I really don't understand the reasoning. I've installed loads of things over the 40 years in the IT business and never have I had to deactivate the anti-virus.
I used the Office "Offline" installer due to similar problems with the initial install. Is there an "Offline" updater?
Thanks,
Dan
BTW, when I tried to download the "offline" installer from this PC I was directed to: http://officecdn.microsoft.com/.../O365HomePremRetail.img
which gives me an HTTP 500 Internal Server Error.
I manually changed this to HTTPS:// and the download started immediately.
Sounds like a flaw to me! Maybe the UPDATE process is doing the same.

After 3-4 hours of Microsoft Support trying to fix it, they realized that this PC is on a "domain" network (vs workgroup).
They told me to refer this problem to our network support people.
This is an Office 365 "home" version. Maybe a "business" version is required for domain (work) networks.
If so, a better error message would be suggested!

After Microsoft attempted to resolve this issue after 3-4 hours, they gave up as they believed it had to do with this PC being on a domain network.
Our support company had a kick at this problem and after turning off our firewall box that protects our entire network, I was told that the UPDATE proceeded.
Does Microsoft have names for their servers that can be added to a firewall?
I still think that a TEXT explanation of the error makes more sense than ... (500).
