no more new fonts may be applied

I'm running Excel 2010 with Windows 7 64-bit and am constantly getting the "No more new fonts may be applied. Please close some other documents and try again." message. It's happening on various spreadsheets at seemingly random times. I'm not doing anything with charts (I've seen some other posts online regarding this same error message where people were copying charts) or macros or anything complicated like that. I am doing a fair bit of copying/pasting and playing with fonts/colors/shading, and have a handful of sheets within each file, but that's about it. When the message appears while I'm working on a specific file, I am able to work on other spreadsheets. In other words, the error doesn't affect all my Excel spreadsheets at the same time. My google searches have yielded a number of hits for other experiencing this same problem, but no solutions that apply to Excel 2010.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Office Community and thanks for posting the question. I understand that every time you work with Excel, you get an error message ‘No more new fonts may be applied. Please close some other documents and try again’.

1. Does this happen when inserting a graph or working with an existing graph in Excel?
2. Does this happen with a specific Excel workbook or all the Excel files on the computer?
3. Are you able to work with other Office applications?

Let us open Excel in safe mode and check. Follow the steps:

1. Click on Start -> All Programs.
2. Go to Accessories -> Click on RUN.
3. Type Excel /safe (Leave a space after Excel) -> Click OK.

Also try changing the default printer and then open the Excel workbook and check if it helps. Refer the link on How to change the default printer on Windows 7:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-your-default-printer

If none of the steps work, then refer to the links provided by ‘Ediard’ in the follow thread and check if it helps:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2010-excel/did-anyone-ever-figure-out-this-problem-error/4248bca9-995d-4a8c-9ebf-639f912ee1a2

I hope the steps provided fixes the issue, if not provide additional information and I will be happy to help you.

Thank you

I saw this exact same response numerous times to other posts before I finally I tried to start my own thread. That's why my original post already addresses each of those questions (1. n/a, 2. specific, 3. yes). And working in safe mode isn't a solution at all.

Is there anyone out there who, after actually reading my post, might be able to give me an original answer that isn't just a cut-and-paste from another post?

Please pardon my rather terse response and realize that is borne out of frustration!

Same here.

I have seen numerous responses online about font scaling of charts. But my excel file has no charts in it at all. Can someone at Microsoft answer this? Thanks.

Hi,

I will assist you with the issue you are facing related to Excel.

I need some details to assist you better:

Does this issue occur with specific file or it’s the same with all the files?

Did you try the steps suggested by Srinivasu in his post?

Did this ever get resolved?  I have the same issue.

I have no charts in my file.

The file was an OCR converted output from a pdf file program but it has no charts.

I have the same problem, and I have no charts. Just some cells have links. Also, my default printer is a Postscript HP Color Laserjet 8550GN, which doesn't have any drivers for 11x17 large format. When I set it to PCL, 11x17 works but some lines look blurred, almost like filled with quotation marks, so I use PS and Letter size in landscape mode instead.

I mentioned the postscript because the error mentioned fonts. I clicked a link a nd when I clicked back on the Excel file, the error message box was there, and clicking OK does nothing... matter of fact, I cannot close Excel! Even clicking on Excel's "close all windows" red "X" in the taskbar won't close it! HELP!

Hi

I am having the same problem.  It happens with blank workbooks, which only contain one simple formula and no charts.

We are running Office 2007 on Windows 10.  This has only just recently started and we tried a system restore in case it is due to an update but nothing changed.

I am having the same issue with Windows 10 Excel 2016.  I export an OCR pdf to Excel and cannot change the document to the same font - just receiving the message "No more new fonts ..."  I can't even change to the majority font in the spreadsheet let alone some new font.

When exporting a pdf to Excel you always have to do some work on fonts so why is this an issue?

Of course, don't start me on the issue of not being able to cut or copy because the clipboard is full (when there is nothing in it)!

These issues have been around far to long and they are still here in the latest versions.

Any (meaningful) answers Microsoft?

This message and variants existed in 2010 version and still does in 2016 for mac.  It does not only occur with dual languages or with multiple charts  as another blog suggested, it has happened with me using only a single font, english, no charts.  Phone help from excel is utterly useless.  A complete moron on other end of the line.  Can do nothing on any page in any workbook.  Why would their even be a limit on fonts?  Any help appreciated!
