New Document or Template Crashes Word

I customized my Quick Access Toolbar by adding a link to "New Document or Template (FileNewDialogClassic)."  Until recently, the link worked without a problem.  Recently, when I click the link, my Word application crashes.  Is this a bug I can fix?  Thank you.

It feels like the command has been removed from the object model in release 1903.  Some users are not experiencing this though. Read through entire thread.

The vba command

application.Dialogs(wdDialogFileNew).Show

will also crash Word.

I have long been an advocate of using this dialog.

File New Variations in the Versions of Word

The people who can make changes to Word seldom, if ever, read anything that is posted in this help forum.

Like you, I am upset about this. Here is my suggestion on UserVoice. Please vote and comment!

Also, use the Feedback mechanism!

I have started a discussion of this problem:

Classic / Legacy FileNew dialog gone! Attempt to use crashes Word. Release 1903

So far there are four reports I've seen, including mine. I will post a link to any that I see in that discussion by editing the initial post. I would invite further discussion of this to that discussion.

I have discovered that it will work through the vba in Word with safe mode. However a Word MVP reports that his 365 pro crashes even in safe mode.

I have tried with a new normal and no Add-Ins, still crashes.

I tried quick and online repair. Still crashes.

Safe mode, does not crash!

Several of us have not and do not have an issue with the New Document or Template dialog in any version of Office.  Any issue must be due to some external influence.

And at least four of us do have an issue...

I've amended my initial response to indicate that it is not a problem for everyone.

If I use an account that has local administrator permissions then the command works fine. If I use an account that does not then the command crashes Word immediately.
