Need excel 2010 as default and keeps opening in 2016

We have a computer running windows 10 that had Microsoft 2016 preinstalled. We reinstalled Office 2010 onto this computer as we had previously paid for it. If I click on a file it opens in 2016 unless I go and open the 2010 app and then open the file from there.

Is there a way to keep 2010 as the default. We have had this computer for around 12 months and this issue has only just started occurring.

Thanks

Sue

Hi Charianne,

Neither Excel program appears in the default apps but both appear under Apps & features so not quite sure what to try now. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Sue

Here's how to choose default apps by file type:

  1. Under Default apps settings, click on Choose default apps by file type.
  2. In the Choose default apps by file type page, check for the Excel file types and change the default app into Excel 2010.

Feel free to post back should you need further assistance.

When I go into "Choose default apps by file type" the only option I receive is to choose Excel 2016. Is there any other way to change the default to Excel 2010.

Office 2016 being the latest version, Excel 2016 will open an excel file by double-clicking it. If you right-click a file, and choose Open With, you’ll only see Office 2016.

Let's try to set the file extensions in Control Panel to associate Excel 2010 to the default application for Excel files. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Open Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Default Programs, select Excel 2010.
  2. Set this program as default, click OK.
  3. Additionally, click Associate a file type or protocol with a specific program in Default Programs to associate excel file.

Update us with results for further assistance.
