Need Access database for food industry

I would like to know if anyone knows where I can find Access databases specifically for bakeries or the food industry? Having such templates would save me countless days of work. Thanks

What tasks do you want this database to perform? If you want to monitor sales any order enter or POS template will do. If you are looking to monitor baking a manufacturing template that accommodates BOMs should work.
Hope this helps,

Scottgem, I am hoping for the database to perform a variety of controls from financials, inventory, cash, purchasing, recipes and related tasks to them, etc. as well as general management usage such as customer and vendor tracking, opening and closing, etc. Basically, it must perform all controls at all levels that any food business requires. It would also be nice for the it to be used as a most basic POS. I know my demands on this database is great but I know it can be done; I just don't have the time and I am not an expert in Access to do it in a way that works flawlessly and coherently.

If you are looking for a free template like this ready for downloading, including source code, I think you will not find it. You are describing a commercial application well worth thousands of dollars, if not more.

But if you do find such template, be sure to come back here and post a link. I'd really like to see it.

I agree with Tom. Templates are generally simple samples that are designed more to give you a blueprint then a turn key application.

You are right, it CAN be done. There are commercial applications that can do it. But even commercial apps will require customizations.

So the way I see it you have a number of options.

1) Find a commercial application that does what you want. The best place to look for such is in trade magazines or at trade shows.

2) Contract with a developer to build something to spec. You will get exactly what you want (and it may not be developed in Access) but it will probably cost in 4 figures.

3) Invest the time to learn Access and build your own. But I would estimate it will take a long time, probably more than a year, to acquire the knowledge and build it on your own.

Hope this helps,

Thanks to both of you. I agree with all your comments and that is why I was hoping that perhaps someone out there had a workable suggestion while being on a very tight budget. Commercial apps/programs out there are way out of my reach and a lot more than what I need. I was hoping for more basic yet still effective ready-to-use templates that require very little customization from my part. At any rate I do appreciate both of you for taking the time and addressing my concern. I will keep at it though.

i can not follow you well on what you mean “basic”。

why do you need such system?
what is the key or urgent problem/field you want to settle(such as inventory, order or finance book keeping)?
have you tried northwind.mdb?

I would think it obvious why he needs such a system. Because he's running a food service business and needs to manage it. He also defined what he needs in his second post. Finally, Northwind is suitable as an example of Order entry and inventory, but not really a food service firm.

Hope this helps,

Thank you everyone for your input. I am always impressed at how helpful people are. Yes, I agree. Northwind is a rather good, complete example to go by. However, the whole idea was to find databases, or elements of databases, ready-made and available for use in the food/bakery industry which would takes care of basic control needs. This would not only really help me because of a very tight budget, but also would help me save a huge investment in time in trying to do it myself. The fact is I still haven't found any such useful templates/databases. It doesn't seem like they exist--at least not without having to pay a lot of money for them (which defeats the whole purpose).

Even with a template you have a reasonable amount of work cut out for you.  Not days, but more like months, particularly if you are new to database design and MS Access.

You might consider hiring a professional to build your database for you or biting the bullet and going with a commercial off the shelf product.  There are many professionals here such as myself who are willing to take on tasks such as yours.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,

RM
