Mysterious blue arrow.

In one of my Word 2016 documents there's a small blue arrow that appears when I hover the cursor over one of the lines of text in the document. Clicking on the arrow hides everything that comes after the line of text. Clicking the arrow again un-hides the contents. Right/middle-clicking on the arrow does nothing and no descriptive text appears when I hover the mouse cursor over the arrow). What is this feature called and how did it get into my document?

Answer

The arrow (triangle) appears in the left margin when you hover over any paragraph that has a Heading style (Heading 1, Heading 2,....). Generally, this applies to any paragraph that has an Outline Level other than Body Text, as shown in the Paragraph dialog:

If you right-click on the text of the paragraph instead of the arrow, the context menu contains an Expand/Collapse item with subentries that let you control the state of the following text.

If you haven't deliberately applied a style of that kind to the paragraph, it probably happened because of an AutoFormat setting. On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of the AutoCorrect dialog (at File > Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect Options), clear these check boxes:

When these boxes are checked, a short single-line paragraph is automatically formatted as a heading, whether you intended it to be one or not. More help on this is at http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/TameAutoFormat.htm.
