MS Account - Change Original Email Account

When an MS account was first created, it was setup with an email address as

*** Email address is removed for privacy *** - which matched the user's actual email address at the time.

They no longer use or have access to that email service and would like to change all references to it on the MS account.

The new email address is - *** Email address is removed for privacy ***

The new address has been added as an alias on the MS account and has been set as the primary alias.

However, the original domain1 address is still shown as that associated with the user's name both on the home page of the account details in the browser AND as the address linked to the user in Settings on the laptop.

How can we change these references to the new, domain2 address?

Thanks

Hi Dave I'm Anna and I'd be happy to help you with your question. In this Forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself. Sorry for the trouble this might have caused. When you first signed up for Microsoft 365, you created an onmicrosoft.com domain. Even if you later added a custom domain, the original onmicrosoft.com domain is used for all your SharePoint and OneDrive URLs. If your organization has gone through a rebranding, merger, or acquisition and needs to change the domain in your SharePoint and OneDrive URLs, you can now do this using PowerShell. For example, if your organization name changed from Contoso to Fabrikam, you can now change your SharePoint URLs from contoso.sharepoint.com to fabrikam.sharepoint.com. Please see the steps below on how to go about this https://learn.microsoft.com/sharepoint/change-your-sharepoint-domain-name I hope this helps ;-), let me know if this is contrary to what you need, I would still be helpful to answer more of your questions. Hello Anna

Many thanks for your reply. I think the terminology I used may have led to some confusion.

The account in question is wholly consumer related - no organisation and no Sharepoint involved.

When I used the terms *** Email address is removed for privacy *** and *** Email address is removed for privacy ***, the domains involved referred to regular email providers. To make this a bit clearer - let's use as an example:

*** Email address is removed for privacy *** as the original address associated with the account, and

*** Email address is removed for privacy *** as the new email address, which has now been set as the primary address

But, the Yahoo account still seems to be linked to the MS account in the home page header in the browser and in Settings on the PC. We would like to remove all reference to the Yahoo account and link to the Gmail account only.

Dave

Sorry for the misunderstanding, since the emails you listed are protected due to security reasons and you mentioned a domain, I believed it to be an organization. Anyways, how long ago did you make the changes? It can take up to 48 hours for your new primary alias to appear on all Microsoft products and services. Also, some of your friends might appear offline until they sign out and sign back in.

Ah! It was only about six hours ago.

Because I am doing this for a friend and will not be with him again for a few days, I will check when I see him and give you an update.

Thanks again.

Hi Anna

I have just been able to review the results of the actions described above and the MS account continues to be linked, principally, to the old unused email address.

In the anonymised image of the MS Account screen below, you can see that, under the user name is an email address provided by plus.com - whereas we need this to be a gmail address which *has* been added as the primary alias.

For the avoidance of doubt, MS required us to use the plus.com account when logging in on a phone to view an Excel spreadsheet.

Can you think of any other way that we should use to change the principal address?

Thanks

Dave
