Microsoft Word - form with fillable fields

Hello!

I created a Microsoft word document with fillable fields, using Microsoft Word desktop version.

But when I open it in Microsoft word on the web (accessing it through office.com, etc.), the form's fields don't display and the form, created on the desktop does not work on the web.

Did anyone experience this?

Thank you in advance -- Anna

Hi,

This is surprising that you cannot insert Content Controls in word document, it explains why there is no Developer tab in Word on the web.

What a limitation!

So, if my company will move completely to the web for Microsoft 365, fillable forms won't work.

Am I right or royally missing something?

You are soooo right!

As John points out, this is only one thing you will not be able to do. There are many more.

My advice to people is to use Word for the web to:

  • Review/read documents.

  • Take notes.

If any editing is to be done, first save a copy and edit that because chances of messing up the document seem correlated to the importance of the document.

For any serious editing, use the desktop application.

Compare Word features on different platforms - Office Support

  • These programs are all named Word and they are all created and published by Microsoft.

  • They all can edit the same document files that have the same file structure. Some of the programs have no control over some of the document structures.

  • But, they are different programs with different features and controls.

As of March, 2023, the most powerful one of these, with the most features, is the Windows desktop application. I do not expect that to change.

The Macintosh desktop application is second with number of features. The things available in the Windows version not yet on the Mac version include Content Controls, Building Blocks, UserForms, and ActiveX. It can use, but cannot create, or modify most Content Controls. AutoText is a Building Block that the Mac can and does use.

The browser version of Word – Word Online – has a Transcribe feature that is not available in any of the other Word programs. Otherwise, the browser version has far fewer features and editing in it has been reported to mess up automatic numbering. Chromebooks use a version of this or of the Android mobile app.

The mobile applications (Android/IOS, etc.) vary somewhat but have far fewer features. I would use them for note taking and for quick viewing/printing, but not for editing. Especially not for editing long or complex documents.

Volunteering to "pay forward" the help I've received in the Microsoft user community.
