Microsoft Word, Excel, etc open then close immediately.

I was adding photo's to a Word document then after around 5 photos the word document crashed on me with no error code.  After restarting Word, the program would launch but immediately close after only a few seconds without any error code.  It also does the exact same when trying to launch in safe mode.

I have Office 2016 - Pro

I've tried:-

*some of the quick fixes recommended on the forum
*Repairing Office
*Repairing Office online
*Completely Uninstalling (Using MS Uninstall Tool) and Re-installing

Any help would be much appreciated.

Dear Earunder,
Thanks for participating in the Microsoft Community. I'm an Independent Advisor and I'll help you.

First, you have to verify if Word has Add-ins that could create this issue, so, run your Word in Safe Mode:
Find the shortcut icon for your Office application.
Press and hold the CTRL key and double-click the application shortcut.
Or with the keys combinations (Windows+R) open RUN and type: word /safe

Also, you could try to clean "cache" of Office with this Microsoft support:
https://support.office.com/en-us/article/delete...

Btw, do you have problems with other applications or only happens with Office apps?

Do not hesitate to ask if you need more information.
I hope it has been useful to you.
Regards,
Renzo.

Hi Renzo,

Thanks for your reply.

I can't open in safe mode as I explained in my post.

I have no cached, pending, etc files either as I have done a complete uninstall and install of Office.

Only happening within the Office programs.

Many Thanks,
Ash

Ok Many, I understand, Do you have installed a Maleware software, or Tune-up utilities or any Antivirus? You could try to stopped it and try to open Word again.

Also, you could move this file Normal.dotm to the desktop, open this address and check if is there:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates
Office will create a new default template.

By other hand if you have installed OneDrive client, you could try this, open OneDrive setting > Office tab > and uncheck the option "Use Office applications to sync Office files that I open", in order to see if is OneDrive that is generated the issue.

Hi Renzo,

I have disabled all the anti virus programs but that didn't change anything.

I have gone so far as to delete the Normal.dotm template but that didn't change anything nor did it create a new template.

OneDrive doesn't open when I go to register / set it up.

I've also updated Graphics Drivers but that didn't change anything.

Ok, about Windows updates, do your Windows 10 is all updated? Do you have installed 32 or 64 bit Office version? You could try to install a previous version, what is the version that you have? You could see in Control panel> uninstall applications.

Thanks again for the response and ideas.

Windows is all up to date.

All Drivers are up to date

64 bit - 16.0.12026.20334

It's really strange as it only started after it crashed when inserting a picture, was working as it should this morning and yesterday.

Tried going offline and seeing if it maybe the internet causing it (trying anything really now) but that didn't change anything.

Make sure that you delete any temporary files that may be left behind after the crash. See http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm.

Afterwards, try repairing Office again (if necessary).

Hi Stefan,

I've removed the temp files from %AppData%

I've also removed the templates

I deleted the Data Folder in the KeyReg USerLocal ...
I re-instated a new Data Folder in the keyReg

Still having the same issue.  Word Launches for 1-2 seconds then closes with no error.
Tried launching Excel to get to the Options, but Excel nor any Office 2016 program even launches.

Thanks for both of your responses, appreciate the ideas.

Ok so I removed EVERYTHING from |  %AppData% > Romaing > Microsoft > Templates

Word launches trying to find the file, informs me it can't find Welcome to Word... or the next Template, but then straight away closes again.

But at least it's now trying I suppose.
