Microsoft Word 2016- screen goes black

I have a brand new computer (asus) but since day one I've had problems in Microsoft Word. It freezes up, the screen goes black and then it goes back to normal. This mostly seems to happen when I move around the windows, like when I try to have two parallell word-windows next to each other. Earlier today this resulted in the entire computer crashing; I got the error message "VIDEO TDR FAILURE". This problem doesn't occur with any other program besides Word.

Thankful for any helpful comments!

Troubleshooting didn't work, neither did uninstalling and reinstalling office.  I have Office 365 that I get free from my university, I wonder if that is the source of this problem. The same thing also happened in PowerPoint earlier today.

Try updating the display driver for your monitor. The safest method is to go to the manufacturer's web site.

This happened to me when working on a drawing canvas in which some of the text boxes had shadows assigned.  Presumably Word is frequently taking a few seconds to render and cache the drop shadows and it goes black while doing so - very annoying.  The more boxes with shadows, the longer it took.  I removed all the shadows and the problem is gone.  Too bad because I like the look of the shadows!

None of my illustration pograms have this problem, but in this case I want the convenience of Word.  Oh well....

What have you tried so far? For example, have you tried updating the video (graphics) driver? Go to the manufacturer's web site.
