Microsoft Teams activates the discrete GPU in MacBook Pros

I just noticed this morning that Microsoft Teams activates the discrete GPU on my MacBook Pro. I have a new 2019 MacBook Pro. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Teams. I am running version 1.00.213765, which is the latest version of the software. I don't remember seeing this happen with previous versions of Teams on the Mac. For now, I cannot use Teams if I'm on battery, which is very often during my work week.

Before someone responds and tells me to post this in the Teams category, let me stop you now before you waste my time. THERE IS NO CATEGORY OR TOPIC THAT FITS SO THIS IS WHERE I'M POSTING MY ISSUE.

That seems to have resolved the issue. If I had to guess, I think that deleting ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams probably fixed it since that folder contains a GPU Cache folder. I will check again to make sure that it's working properly later today.

Hi,

i have the same problem and figured out the following.

If I quit Teams and delete ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/settings.json and restart all is fine.

If I quit and restart the GPU is used again.

If I quit Teams and delete ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/settings.json and restart all is fine.

If I quit and restart the GPU is used again.

and so on and on

I think the problem is in the settings.json, if its created new - all fine, afterwords the GPU is used

I am exactly on the same spot.

Running Teams after deleting settings.json would not use discrete GPU.

Re-running Teams would go back to using discrete GPU.

This issue still needs attention for fix.  JoVogel and ppolang's responses are what is also occurring for us.  Deletion fixes it one time; starting Teams again goes back to activating discrete GPU.

If this is design behavior, then Microsoft is screwing its Mac users (as usual). I WILL NOT use Teams on my MacBook Pro because of this. My battery life is more important to me than using Microsoft's flawed software on my Mac. There is no functional reason for switching on the discrete GPU. The temporary fix does not result in any performance degradation of the app, so why is it necessary to use the discrete GPU? Apps like Photoshop, and Illustrator need this, but Teams does not. I am demanding that you change the app's behavior to make it stop using the discrete GPU. This is not a request. It's a demand.
