Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac, Microsoft Word update problems

I recently asked Microsoft Consumer Support for help when my Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac would not save existing Word files or accept new Word files. Your Microsoft Technical Support representative, who was so helpful in resolving my problem, told me older Macs like mine (OS X El Capitan, Version 10.11.1) are vulnerable to problems using Microsoft Office updates because the latest Mac OS, Mojave, has heightened security provisions older Mac Os’s have difficulty handling. When Microsoft alerts me to new Office updates, how can I avoid having the Word problems I faced in my Service Request? Thank you for your attention.

And you seem to be continuing to get misleading and erroneous advice from Microsoft "experts."

Installing updates is a good thing, not a bad thing. You've been told a bunch of rubbish. Please ignore it.

INSTALL UPDATES:

Ensure your Mac and Office have the latest updates. Here’s how to install updates:

If your Mac is managed by an IT department, have them install updates

If you have control of your Mac, make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then:

Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates.

After you install Mac OS updates

In any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app. Let AutoUpdate install updates and then restart your Mac.

All Users

If you use Antidote, Webex, Silverlight, EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley, Suitcase, 3rd party font management tools or other add-ins there is a potential for crashes and unwanted misbehavior unless you also update your add-ins to the latest update. Install updates for these programs if you have them.

It is possible that because your install is so far behind in updates that AutoUpdate itself is too old to work. If AutoUpdate tells you there are no updates available and yet you know your software is not up to date, download a fresh copy of the current version of AutoUpdate from this link, install and then run AutoUpdate to bring your installation to current update level, then restart your Mac.

Be sure to include the version number and OS version when asking your question.
