Links to office files opening in browser rather than native application

Hi,

Within our 365 for Business team, when we share files or attach as a link (rather than a copy of the file itself) to an email, some users will have the file open in the online app within the browser rather than in the native application.  How can we change it so that those links will open in Excel/Word/Powerpoint?  Thanks!

Hi MJ_133,

Thanks for your query in the community.

Unfortunately it‘s the default behavior that files' sharing link directly open the file in browser. We will need to manually click "Open In Desktop App" to open the file in desktop application.

We cannot set shared links directly open in Office desktop application. Thanks for your understanding.

You may try to create the following link which will prompt the user to open the file in Office desktop application.

ms-word:ofe|u|https://yourtenant.sharepoint.com/sites/site1/Shared%20Documents/filename.docx

For PowerPoint and Excel files, replace word with powerpoint or excel in ms-word:ofe|u| and replace the file name at the end of the URL.

Here is an similar thread for your reference: Open in client application when sharing link

Best regards,

Tina
