Linking Excel Workbooks Error - File on another domain

Hello,

I'm trying to link 2 online excel workbooks but keep getting an error message saying "UNABLE TO REFRESH We couldn't get updated values from a linked workbook." and "file on another domain".

both workbooks are save in the same folder and I am linking them by doing the steps in Workbook Link support coming to Excel for the web - Microsoft Community Hub

I have allowed the trust external workbook links in the settings section. I've also tried on different PC's to see if it was a antivirus software blocking it but it wasn't.

I tried raising the issue on the online chat help of Excel and got told to ask for help on here,

Has anybody had this issue and managed to resolve it?

Thanks

Dear RobG21,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community, we are glad to assist you.

We understand that you are experiencing an issue with an error message in Excel, and in order to better assist you, we need to confirm some information with you.

Is this issue currently only occurring on the Excel website? Is the error message appearing in the client?

Based on your description, you have added trust to Excel and are currently accessing Excel.com on multiple computers that are experiencing the error message is that correct?

Can you please share with us the link to your Excel and the computer environment you are using, whether it is a personal or corporate computer?

Is there a corporate domain environment involved?

We presume that this error message you are experiencing is related to a domain account, so we need to check the specifics with you first, so please reply to share the details with us.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regard

Dear RobG21

I would like to add something to my previous reply.

You can try to open Excel's main workbook, search for "Workbook Links" at the top, click "Settings", and check the "Always trust workbook links" box. Select "Ask before refreshing links" or "Always refresh links".

Of course, both workbooks can perform this operation.

Afterwards, check the situation again to see if the display is normal.

Hello

Thank you for your reply.

Yes the issue is only occurring on the web version, Any links I've set up online work, if I open both the source workbook and destination where its copied to on the PC in the app.

I have tried my own 365 login on multiple computers and all have the same issue with the links not working.

I am using a office 365 family account on a personal computer so no domain involved

I've tried the ask before refreshing links and always refresh with no luck.

Thanks

Rob

Dear RobG21

Thank you for your reply.

As the client version of Office is able to set the trust center additionally, if in the web side, set up to add trust is also invalid, we still suggest that you can try to change the browser, use the privacy mode, turn off the firewall and other operations to try.

Did someone else share this Excel with you?

After all, there are still differences in functionality and settings between the web version and the client version, so if you are still getting the error message, we recommend you submit your feedback on Office.com and let the development team investigate your issue.

Thank you for your understanding and patience and I look forward to hearing from you.

Starting today, I've also noticed excel online doing this as well, but I didn't see this two days ago when I last was working with these spreadsheets.

Similar situation as OP where I can open the two spreadsheets in the client and there is no problem but online will not update. If I have both open in excel online and try to create a new reference to an existing connected file, it also won't bring in the new data either, just shows what was there when the last successful update sync happened. These two files are saved in the same onedrive account. I've been using these files in tandem for 9+ months now no problem.

Dear Steven Jarrett-White

Thank you for your reply.

May I ask if you recreate a new link on the website? Will it synchronize properly? Or will the error message still appear?

Considering that the client side display works fine, we recommend that you submit your feedback on the webside first and let the webside support staff assist you in investigating the issue, as we can't rule out that it's specific to the webside.

Although we have not received any feedback from other users on the same situation, we will continue to follow up.

Also, could you please tell us that the steps we mentioned before, such as turning off the firewall, are not working for the web version of the site?

Today I solve the problem:

Go to "OneDrive" in "Start", sign-in, and downloads to "OneDrive - Personal" the file folders and files that you need.
