Unfortunately, the Mac version appears to be crippled in the area of adding new SmartArt files. In Windows, the Templates folder contains a SmartArt Graphics folder where you can place new SmartArt templates (file ending of .glox). The Mac version doesn't have that folder. I tried creating a folder by that name in both the Templates folder and the User Content folder, but no additional SmartArt names appeared in the Insert>SmartArt menu.
I've created a PowerPoint for Mac user voice suggestion that this oversight be corrected. Please add your vote: SmartArt Graphics folder missing

Hey John - Would they be the 136 .glo files contained in SmartArt.framework?
A few examples:
accentedpicture.glo
bendingpictureblocks.glo
blist2.glo
bubblepicturelost.clo
halfcircleorganizationchart.glo

Those are the files that are already displayed in the SmartArt dropdown. When Office 2013 for Windows was released, Microsoft released 17 more files as automatic downloads that went into the Templates\SmartArt Graphics folder. They appear in the SmartArt dropdown as a new Office.com category. Tabbed Arc is one of those.
Both Office 2008 and 2011 have a SmartArt Graphics folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/SmartArt Graphics. Placing a .glox file in that folder makes it show up in the list of SmartArt. So it's a capability that's been removed.
