Internal SharePoint site and Google Analytics

Hi,

We have recently started to use Microsoft SharePoint site for our internal broadcast/ communication purpose.

Understood that there is a built-in site analytics tool, however we are keen to find out more on how the site visitors are using the site and etc., therefore we are looking into the options of embedding Google Analytics.

Is embedding Google Analytics in internal SharePoint site recommended?

Does this expose any internal contents to Google?

Thanks.

    Dear Curious SKSK,

Good day! Thank you for posting to Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, we understand that you want to analyze SharePoint's Web usage with Google Analytics.

First of all, to answer your question, if you use Google Analytics, your data will be disclosed to Google. Since this is a third-party application, we do not recommend you to use Google Analytics.

In addition to the site analysis features that come with SharePoint, you can also export usage reports from the administrator Center: View usage data for your SharePoint site (microsoft.com) &Microsoft 365 admin center SharePoint site usage reports - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

I hope the above information will be helpful to you.

    Sincerely,

    Tin | Microsoft Community Moderator

    Hi Tin,

    Thanks for your reply.

Also, to clarify further in terms of data disclosure to Google, the data here refer specifically to

    1. ip address
    2. SharePoint site URL
    3. contents/ documents in SharePoint site

    Or all the above?

Is there any formal write up by Microsoft on this matter?

    Thanks =)

    Dear Curious SKSK,

We understand that you want to know exactly what private information you're exposing by using Google Analytics. Unfortunately, according to my investigation, this information is not currently specified in official documents.

Please understand that this query is outside of our support boundaries. To avoid giving the wrong answer and for you to be assisted properly, we kindly recommended you can raise a service request in Microsoft 365 admin center, which the support there has the related permission and resource to help you check from the backend.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Please do not hesitate to post your queries in Microsoft Community and we will always do our best to assist you!

    Sincerely,
