Inserting multiple photos into WORD overlaps them all on one page

This is a new issue. I used to be able to routinely insert say, 74 photos into Word and it would expand to 74 pages, with one photo on a page.

Now when I insert the multiple photos (JPEG's from my iPhone in RAW format) it stacks all 74 photos on top of each other onto a single page! (Stacking or overlapping). I don't want this!

  • I changed the advanced setting for cut and paste to Top and Bottom. That had no effect.

  • I noticed a setting in Layout Options | "See More" | Position called "allow overlap" was checked. Unchecking it has no effect either. I don't know how to uncheck that "Allow Overlap" check box as a default....?

Help!

Go to File>Options>Advanced and in the "Cut, copy, and paste" section of the dialog, select "In line with text" from the "Insert/paste pictures as:" drop down.

Hope this helps,

Dear Zane Paxton

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. We are happy to help you.

Based on your description, it seems that when you insert multiple images in Word, all images overlap them all on one page.

We did a test on our end, no matter how many photos we insert in Word document, it will display as one photo on a page.

Per our search, some users also have this behavior before, and they can solve it via Go to File>Options>Advanced and in the Cut, copy, and paste section of the Word Options dialog, select "In line with text" for the "Insert/paste pictures as:" option, please try this step then check the behavior.

Besides, to help us narrow down this behavior, we would like to collect more detailed information to help us do a further investigation:

  • May I know does all documents have this behavior or only the specific one has? Please try to create a new blank document then insert images and see the outcome.

  • Can you tell us your Word product information? Go to File>Account and share a screenshot to us.

We’re looking forward to your reply and will continue to help you all the time!  If there are any misunderstanding or unclear, you can post back in your free time.

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Sincerely,

Stacey | Microsoft Community Moderator

The pictures all get stacked on one page with either/both settings.

This was attempted with a blank document after loading a fresh session of Word.

It also occurs with an older document where it did work previously. The issue replicates consistently with new and old documents.

Dear Zane,

We appreciate that you posted back and provided the detailed information with us. We’re sorry for the late reply.

We checked your description, it seems that new documents and old documents have the same problem. And you have also set the settings under Options.

If my understanding is right, we’d suggest you refer to this article to repair office: Repair an Office application - Microsoft Support, and it will help reset all settings in Word.

At the same time, please try to set Word into Safe Mode, check whether the issue is caused by the add-ins. Close Word, press win + R, in the Run box, type winword /safe, and click OK, then you can open files to check if the same problem will occur.

If it is convenient for you, could you also provide the product information and version of Word? You can go to Word > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it.

May I know if the other office apps have the same problem?

Your understanding and patience will be highly appreciated. I hope that you are keeping safe and well!

Sincerely,

Sukie | Microsoft Community Moderator

Images inserted "In-line with text" will NOT overlap one another.

True, but they can appear to if they've been inserted into a paragraph with 'exact' line spacing.

Go to File>Options>Advanced and in the "Cut, copy, and paste" section of the dialog, select "In line with text" from the "Insert/paste pictures as:" drop down.

Those instructions are for Word for Windows. In Word for Mac, do the following:

On the Menu Bar choose Word > Preferences > Edit

Click the pop-up menu for Insert/Paste Pictures as in line with text.

Be sure to include the version number and OS version when asking your question.

Very little, in fact. The issue of pics bot displaying fully due to that setting has been a common-enough topic in this forum.
