How to turn off Copilot in Word for Windows (version 2501)

Note: due to some earlier confusion about the instructions I wrote in my original post,

I have revised my original post to restrict it to Microsoft Word for Windows only.

Microsoft just released an update this month to both Windows and Mac users that now includes the Copilot feature in the 365 Office desktop apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

This post provides instructions for disabling Copilot in Word (version 2501) on the Windows platform only (Windows 10 and 11).

Attention Excel and PowerPoint users: I found a post on Microsoft's Copilot website (link here) that seems to suggest that Microsoft in planning to roll out an off switch for those apps soon. There is no way to turn off Copilot in those apps, other than turning off your privacy settings.

Here's how to disable Copilot in Word for Windows:

Users with Word version 2501 who begin with a new blank Word document will now see a line asking them to draft with Copilot (see Screenshot #1 below). At this point you may be like millions of other jaw-dropping users this past week who are about to scream... or reach for the clonazepam.

Thankfully, Copilot in Word can be disabled once and for all, quickly and easily.

Click on File > Options > Copilot and then uncheck the Enable Copilot check box. See Screenshot #2 below.

It just came out in version 2501.

I don't have an "options" area under "file."

There are two common reasons for this:

  • If you're using the desktop programs that are installed on your computer, there may be a "More..." item at the bottom of the left column. (This happens if the program's window isn't tall enough to show all the commands in that column.) Click the "More..." to find the Options item.

  • If you're using the online apps in your browser, there is no Options item for the program, and no way to remove Copilot.

Hi Charles.

That option only applies to Microsoft Word.

The other desktop apps do not provide that option.

My original posting was intended to help users know how to disable Copilot in the 365 Office desktop apps.

My post referred to the 365 Office desktop apps, not the online version.

Only Microsoft Word has an actual option to disable Copilot completely.

I checked all the other apps. They don't have an option as in Word to disable Copilot. The implementation of Copilot is inconsistent across the desktop apps.

I've revised my post to include screenshots and further clarification.

Hi Page,

Charles did not indicate which desktop app he was referring to. His screenshot referred to Microsoft Word only.

Only Microsoft Word has the Copilot option to enable/disable. You will only see the Copilot option in Word Options if you update your version of the 365 Office apps to the latest version released this week.

Another possibility is that Copilot is being rolled out gradually to users. Some will see Copilot, others not.

Concerning Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, etc., as I mentioned in my original post (now revised), there is NO option to turn off Copilot.

You can send feedback to Microsoft via the Feedback icon under the Help ribbon tab in each 365 Office desktop app.

The change in Word is in direct response to user feedback. If users of Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote are equally vocal, maybe they'll get the option as well.
