I have created a style and set a format for it. I click on ‘Add To Template’ and I expect that the style will be added to the normal.dot template and the next document I open will have this style that I created. But that doesn't happen. I tried quitting word etc. but the new style I created is never available in other documents. Also next time I open the style in the original document where I created the style in the 'Add To Template' is unchecked. Another minor problem is that when I try to create a new style from selection it never copies the attributes of the font (like color, italics etc.) into the style. But I usually set these myself to workaround the problem. The style can be applied seamlessly into that current document but doesn't transfer between documents.

Add to template would be unchecked next time, unless you check it again.
This is something to check if you wish when you modify the style. You can go back and check it later, too. It never stays checked.
Adding it to the template does not change anything but the template.
New documents created later from that template will use the style, not existing documents.
What is the relationship between a Microsoft Word document and its template?
To copy styles from one document to the other, use the Organizer.
According to Word guru John Korchok, one way to access the Organizer on versions of Word for the Mac is:
Choose Tools>Templates and Add-ins.
Click on the Organizer button.
This is similar to the methods in Windows.

You can set a document to automatically update styles from the template upon opening. This is usually a bad idea, though. What happens when I send my document to someone else? Will Word mess up my formatting?

I'm not sure I'm clear on the main issue... It seems as though you are expecting the newly created style to be immediately available in documents which existed before the style was created. If so, that simply isn't going to happen. It will be available in any new documents you create after saving it.
You can use Organizer to copy a style from one document or template to another.
As for the 2nd point, the box isn't checked because the style already has been added to the Normal.dotm template.
The default is to create a Paragraph Style. Re the last issue, the font attributes are captured only if they have been applied to all content in the paragraph being used as the model.
