How to fix laggy/slow Excel?

I have done a lot of research on this topic but have found nothing that works. Excel is running extremely slow especially when scrolling and performing basic actions. I don't understand why it's running so slow since I have a pretty decent build.

Other note: This particular file is very low on formulas. (i.e. lookup-type and CPU intensive formulas are not a problem here)

PC Specs:

  • OS: Win 11 Pro

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core Processor

  • RAM: 32.0 GB

  • GPU: Nvidia GEFORCE RTX 3070Ti

Trouble shooting attempts:

  1. Installed any system updates

  2. Turned off automatic calculations

  3. Disabled/enabled GPU hardware acceleration

  4. Updated GPU driver

  5. Started Excel in safe mode

  6. Disabled all add-ins/add-ons

  7. Removed all printers

  8. Restarted PC in a "clean" state (performed a "clean boot")

Not sure what else I can try, but everything I've listed above has not worked.

Thanks for your help!

Hi, I'm Sneha and I'd be happy to help you out with your question. Sorry for the inconvenience caused. You've already tried a lot of different troubleshooting methods already. Please try few more things that we can explore to fix this issue :- Firstly, have you checked the size of your Excel file? Sometimes, a large file size can cause Excel to slow down. Try reducing the size of the file by removing any unnecessary data or formatting. Another thing to check is whether there are any other background processes running on your computer that could be affecting Excel's performance. Make sure to close any unnecessary programs and free up as much memory as possible. You could also try clearing the Excel cache, increasing virtual memory, and disabling animations. Additionally, repairing your Office installation might be helpful if the installation itself is causing issues. For more Information, please refer to following resources :- 1. Here is how I solved it in a matter of seconds when nothing else worked:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH7LdHVKAZE

Word Option - Advanced - Display - just put a checkmark in the field before "Disable hardware acceleration graphics"

Someone told me that the problem was caused because I installed third language pack, so if this does not work for you and you have three language packs, try deinstalling one pack - maybe that would work.

Someone told me that this happens in Office 2021 with three language packs but not in Office 2019, so a third possible solution (if you need three language packs) would be to go back to Office 2019
